I was looking forward to reading this title -- but it is not what I expected -- not sure really what I was expecting. It is a counting book using items that you would find in a salad. Starting with one (1) Avocado that with a few pen strokes has been made to look like 1 Avocado Deer shown on a two-page spread (very simple number numeral, number spelled out, actual picture of the food item impossed with the ink marks to create an animal, and the text with the food item and the animal mentioned)...then comes 2 Radish Mice, and so the story continues until the last page shows One Big Delicious Salad! (and I might add the salad is without cheese and croutons -- my two favorite things). The very, very last page has the final additions of sea salt, olive oil, lemon juice, pinch of black pepper....along with a few additional creative strokes making my favorite lemon piggies. Although there wasn't a storyline...the creativity is wonderful. I used to do something similar with scrawling artwork and letters instead of fruit. I would use it more for art class than anything else. A counting book with anthropomorphized vegetables and fruits that all end up chopped up in a salad bowl. I really did not enjoy this book. I was confused about the fruits and veg being turned into animals: why was this necessary? It seems a little mean, considering they are going to be cut up and eaten. I like the idea of a counting recipe, and I think this could have been done well, I just thought it missed the mark. In this counting book, increasing amounts of various ingredients are added together to make a salad. The illustrations are an interesting mix of photographed vegetables with line drawings that convert them into something new (e.g., a cat clementine). The "story" is pretty slim as this is essentially just a teaching tool for the numbers one through 10, but the illustrations really are clever and make this an interesting read beyond the standard counting book. no reviews | add a review
