Geweldig coming-of-age boek.

It was good. Very long. So long, there was a nod to its longest in the novel itself once its revealed as a “memoir.” I liked it well enough. Not as much as Wellness. It didn’t connect with me totally, but it was enjoyable to read, if not completely credible.

4.5 or 5

This book is nuts but I loved it. Jumping from modern day back to the late 60s and early 70s to explore one man's life, family history and the people in his orbit. Great characterizations of a guy maybe in the middle of a personal crisis, a depressed guy hiding from life in a video game, a total airhead evil mastermind college girl, and many others.

I think it's probably the most enjoyable book I've read this year. ( )

Couldn't decide on 3 or 4 stars for this one. Went with 3 for two reasons; I wasn't crazy about the ending and I also thought some parts of the book were longer and more detailed than necessary (video game descriptions for one). But overall, I enjoyed it even though it bounced around from very funny to some very dark topics. It was a page turner for me. ( )

Life is too short for 621 pages of terrible people doing terrible things to one another. Made it to page 250 and gave up

All told, The Nix is not the most extravagantly awful critically-acclaimed novel I’ve ever read—that would probably be one of Cormac McCarthy’s or Don DeLillo’s howlers. It’s just not very good. The plot is a real mess, with contrived framing devices, jittery narrative focus, and little forward momentum. On a sentence level, Hill dutifully sprinkles unusual metaphors throughout his text in order to demonstrate that he is a serious literary stylist.

Quotations

You never even decided your life would be this way—it’s simply the way life has become. You’ve been carved out by the things that have happened to you. Like how the canyon can’t tell the river which way to shape it. It just allows itself to be cut.
