A great beginning to hopefully a great series. There's a little bit of everything in this short, magic, romance, a murder case, corruption and familiars that shift. Much like Ms Hawk's other series, there are plot twists and just plain fun in this prize. ( )

This was a fun short, but there was only a little about the world. Plus, I wanted more about these characters. Had I read this first, I would've been sad.

Luckily there's a book (Hexbreaker) but different lead characters. (Luckily they are also very good.) ( )

In The 13th Hex we meet Dominic Kopecky a hex maker/breaker in New York’s Metropolitan Witch Police office. He takes pride in his hexes, but his dream was to be a witch. Only his aptitude tests showed he had no talent as a witch whatsoever. So there he was working at his desk when Rook, an unbonded Raven familiar, stopped in front of Dominic’s desk. This story is told in third person through Dominic’s eyes.

When I first started to read this story, I wondered if the author had based it on a prompt image of a crow and young man with wings on fire, sitting on the ledge of a building. Even if she didn’t, it definitely calls to mind this artwork.

The 13th Hex is set in an Alternate Universe. It reminds me of a cross between the 1920’s when New York was corrupt, and the magical world of Harry Potter rolled up together. The familiars aren’t like Animagi or the pets, but like witch’s familiars.

I liked both characters. Dominic tried to be satisfied with his life once his dream of being a witch was dashed. Rook worked at the MWP in a different department, but contacted Dominic with a suspicion he had about a supposedly solved crime. I got the impression that Dominic was courageous, but had suppressed that part of him for so long, it took a nudge from Rook to break free from his usual rut.

There was an instant attraction between the two MCs with Rook knowing immediately that Dominic was his witch. Dominic didn’t have that same feeling. He only knew that he was very attracted to the handsome man. Rook gives off an air of confidence at the beginning, but we discover he’s unsure if Dominic will accept him once Rook tells him about bonding. It turns out that bonding is not instant. The human has to accept the familiar and use their magic and Dominic believes he has no magic. Another interesting thing about bonding is if the familiar is captured, they can be forced to bond with someone they don’t wish to bond with.

This was a short story so we aren’t given much information about the world or the mystery that the MCs get involved in. We get more of an overview to get us familiar with the world. I think if this book was twice as long it would have worked better, but it still pulled me in quickly. I’ve pre-ordered the next book and can’t wait to read it when it becomes available.

The 13th Hex is a quick, enjoyable story that draws the reader in, but don’t expect a lot of information about the world, the characters, or mystery. I’m guessing that gets covered more in the next book. Other than being too short, I’d recommend this. I give The 13th Hex, 4 Stars

A decent short. It sets the stage for this new world I suppose. The mystery and relationship were just okay (It's hard to do much with so few pages), but I found the characters likable. ( )
