A fun read with a good, solid 3 stars. Recommended to adventurous boys and girls of ALL ages. ( ) Book 297 - Robert Louis Stevenson - Treasure Island I knew parts of this story, again probably from The Muppets movie named after this novel. The story of Jim Hawkins…a young boy who longs for the sea but is trapped working with his mother and father in their tavern. Then…one day…a ‘Captain’ comes to stay…he has some gold…some rum and an armful of stories about treasure…pirates and the romance of the sea. It is a fascinating story about growing up and growing apart…about family and about adventure. A story of the sea, sand… traps and tricks. The connection between Long John Silver and Hawkins is much deeper than I thought I knew. Several times through the story in fact, it keeps both of them alive when all seems lost. With outstandingly written secondary characters that all play key parts…it is easy to see why this had be one a favourite tale to be made in to all sorts of media including audio…cinematic and television. The climax is completely appropriate and fitting and the boy who leaves to sea…becomes a man, as for Silver…well…even after 140 years I am not going to spoil that one. Rightly called a classic. I'm reading this to DS as he sews on his lap quilt. We started it a while ago, so picked it up again about halfway through--partly with his encouragement, after watching "Treasure Planet" yet again. It is really fun to compare/contrast to the movie. The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is that the language is sometimes hard to read/understand. It's a combination of pirate speech and the speech of that time.
