Let me tell you that I never felt like I was reading an 800 page book. It hooked me by page 70 and never stopped. I never felt like the story lulled or drug along. If you are a fan of SJM and feel intimidated by the size of the book, do not let that happen. This was 100% worth every word. ( ) Synopsis: 'Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savoring every pleasure Lunathion—otherwise known as Crescent City— has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city—and Bryce’s world. Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most notorious nightclubs. But when the murderer attacks again, Bryce finds herself dragged into the investigation and paired with an infamous Fallen angel whose own brutal past haunts his every step. Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, wants nothing to do with Bryce Quinlan, despite being ordered to protect her. She stands for everything he once rebelled against and seems more interested in partying than solving the murder, no matter how close to home it might hit. But Hunt soon realizes there’s far more to Bryce than meets the eye—and that he’s going to have to find a way to work with her if they want to solve this case. As Bryce and Hunt race to untangle the mystery, they have no way of knowing the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the darkest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir...' From crescentcity.fandom.com/ Review: Hmmm....the first few chapters left me rather cold, but I'm glad I kept reading. It's not as sweeping and as well done as the Court series, but really worth reading. And thus began my Sarah J. Maas binge of 2024. I'd like to start off by saying I'm not one of those SJM super-fans; I read and loved 2.5/4.5 of her ACOTAR books years ago. I still haven't and right now don't plan on reading the Throne of Glass series. That said, I'd heard really good things about the Crescent City series, and when my best friend recommended it to me, I finally decided to give it a go. I'll be honest, this one was difficult for me to get into. Having read A Court of Thorns and Roses, I was expecting it to be more of the same classic high fantasy setting with a few more "fucks" (I know how you do the YA vs. Adult rating system, publishers). I was not expecting a modern high fantasy setting. I think I got about one and a half chapters in and wasn't feeling it. I was about to put this book back on my shelf, partially read, and forget I'd ever opened it. Well, I took a couple days, talked it over with my coworkers, and was also firmly reprimanded by my friend, who told me she understood, but that I needed to keep going. So I did. Besides, I have a policy that I'll give a book about 150 pages and if I still don't like it, that's when I'm allowed to cast it aside. Boy, am I glad I listened to Juice (again). The world building of this series is well fleshed out, the characters arcs are compelling, and once I got over the modernity of the setting, I was fully invested. Also, it had plenty of "fucks".
