Like Stephen King but without the "let's see how gross I can make it" factor. Highly recommend to horror fans, and non horror fans but just be wary. Definitely want to read more of her books. ( ) ‘That’ll be Ashburn’s new owner.’” Marion’s body began to shake with silent laughter as her eyes, flat and dead, arrested Adrienne. “‘I wonder how long it’ll be before she goes mad, too.’” This was a fun little haunted house ghost story. At the start, I wasn't 100% sure I'd like this one. The MC, Addy, is a bit odd. She doesn't own a phone and barely a laptop. She comes completely unprepared to a house she's just inherited from an older family she knows nothing about. She arrives with $20 and a little luggage - no cleaning supplies, not call ahead to turn on water and power (and no money to do that) - nothing. But meh, whatever, I was able to skip over a lot of the oddity to jump right into the odd things in the house and the spooks at night. I loved the addition of Wolf and thought he was just adorable. I love that she talked to him all the time. The mystery was pretty good, the conclusion was great. I liked this one! Maybe a 3.5 but rounded up. Overall I really enjoyed it, especially the unraveling of the family lore. However, the inconsistent tone, uneven pacing, and clunky dialogue stuck out for me. Would definitely read more Coates' books, especially if I'm feeling like an easy, creepy read. Something that I did find kind of amusing... the audiobook has an American narrator, and for the most part it sounds like it's supposed to be set in the north America (maybe not, just the impression that I got), but then some expressions, dialogue, or wording was so Australian that it suck out like a sore thumb, especially when spoken with an American accent. Made me chuckle. no reviews | add a review

Everyone knows about Ashburn House. They whisper its old owner went mad, and restless ghosts still walk the halls. They say it's the dwelling place of something cruel and sinister. But when Adrienne?desperate and in need of a place to stay?inherits the crumbling old mansion, she only sees it as a lifeline... until darkness falls. Strange messages are etched into the walls. Furniture moves when she leaves the room. There's something here?something powerful, angry, and hell-bent on shaking things up. Worse, a grave hidden in the depths of the forest hints at a terrible, unforgivable secret. Eventually Adrienne can't ignore that a twisted thing lives in the house, its hungry eyes ever-watchful. Chasing the threads of a decades-old mystery, it isn't long before she realizes she's become prey to something deeply unnatural and intensely resentful. She has no idea how to escape. She has no idea how to survive. Only one thing is certain: Ashburn's dead are not at rest. No library descriptions found. |
