Funny.
I probably would have enjoyed it more if today had not been part of this week. My thoughts are elsewhere, normalcy feels like a fake backdrop that will shatter at any moment and I feel so... shatteringly stunned that by some twist I am where I am instead of somewhere else. It feels too heartless to be grateful so I am just existing in a state of extreme awareness of a responsibility that really should hit me more deeply more often.

All of that, which I needed to get out somewhere, is just to say that I am not the best judge at the moment. ( )

Probably super cute for one-on-one, but very hard to read in storytime. I don't think the kiddos got it. ( )

I originally read this book over 2 years ago. At first I loved it. I thought it was so cute. Then I read someone else’s review pointing out that it was stalking and grooming. And now upon a second read, they are correct. This reads like the song Stan from Eminem. The Ox is writing to his favorite celebrity Gazelle. He rights constantly, no matter how many times Gazelle asks him to stop. Yep, this is a playbook of a stalker or a groomer. And I am regretful of my original review. While I do not think libraries should remove this book from their collection, I do think it is a great example of what NOT to do.

Dear Littens, thank you for finding and sharing this book with me. It was lovely. And it could have gone on much longer. I really want to see Gazelle fall in love with Ox. For now I will have to live with falling in love with this book.

I've pretty much stopped including picture books on this Goodreads account, but this one is just that good. ( )

The drawings are beautiful! The message is not. If someone tells you they aren't interested, you should listen! If someone insults you unrelentingly, you shouldn't thank them for it! At first I thought I might have been oversensitive, but based on the faces of the parents at my storytime, I wasn't. ( )

Book description
The story of an epic, if initially unrequited love affair between a graceful gazelle and a clumsy, hapless ox. Romance will never be the same. Adam Rex's hilarious, sweet, and at times heartbreaking letters between a hopelessly romantic ox and a conceited, beautiful gazelle is paired perfectly with Scott Campbell's joyful illustrations to bring you a romance for the ages.
