This is a classic beloved by many, especially during Women’s History Month in March. As I got into the story of the March sisters, I hoped to uncover the magic that has captivated generations of readers. I struggled to connect with the writing style. The narrative is slow, with events unfolding at a leisurely pace that left me wanting more excitement. The characters are somewhat flat and stereotypical, lacking the depth and complexity I hoped for. While I appreciate the themes of sisterhood and female empowerment, it was weighed down by the moral lessons and religiosity. It felt stifling. I initially mistook the characters for being English before realizing they were Americans interacting with English visitors well into the book. I'm glad to have finally checked it off my reading list, but I don't like it or recommend it. While the writing style feels outdated, it holds a special place in literary history. ( )

I really enjoyed this lovely story of the March family, and learnt about each individual March sister. Their qualities were so interesting, and they complimented one another so well. I love their antics, and their beautiful devotion to each other, and to their friends. I could read this book over and over, and still love it as much. ( )

I have been curious about this book for a while, mostly because of the excellent Greta Gerwig film adaptation. It was a slight disappointment - a bit too twee and a bit too religious for my liking. But it was a relatively pleasant experience to read, and made me appreciate the film even more. ( )

Having not read this since I was in my 20s, I was surprised to find I did not love it now as much as I did then. I still adored the sisters, Marmee, and Laurie, but I grew weary of the sanctimonious speeches of the narrator on how to be a loving wife and mother in 1800s New England. I guess as a 59-year-motherless-old lady, I didn't want or need to hear them, and there were too many. Still 💜'ed the stories of these little women. ( )

Quotations
Between Meg and Marmee:

"He's away all day, and at night when I want to see him, he is continually going over to the Scotts'. It isn't fair that I should have the hardest work, and never any amusement. Men are very selfish, even the best of them."
"So are women. Don't blame John till you see where you are wrong yourself." (Chapter 38, Gutenberg.org edition)

Gentlemen, which means boys, be courteous to the old maids, no matter how poor and plain and prim, for the only chivalry worth having is that which is the readiest to pay deference to the old, protect the feeble, and serve womankind, regardless of rank, age, or color. Disambiguation notice
This LT work is the complete, unabridged Little Women , containing both Part First (originally published in 1868) and Part Second (published in 1869). American editions almost always contain both parts. UK and European editions frequently contain only Part First, with Part Second being published separately as Good Wives. If you are not sure which version you have, check the table of contents. Part First ends with Chapter 23, "Aunt March Settles the Question." Part Second ends with the chapter entitled "Harvest Time". Please do not combine with editions that contain only Little Women: Part I., or with any abridgments, adaptations, or film versions.
