( ) I had the next book in this series in my wish list and it went on sale, so I moved this one up in my reading queue so I would know if I would be interested in paying sale price for book 2. At the halfway point of this book, I was not going to buy book 2, at all, sale or no. At the end of this book, I thought I might buy book 2, but it is no longer on sale so I will not. If it goes back on sale, I probably will. I prefer post-apocalyptic books which spend time exploring the process of the apocalypse more so than the human feces that arise post-apocalypse to rape and murder everyone. Well, every woman, and anyone "different". This book spends about a chapter on the apocalypse and the rest on how "good people" try to establish a new life while "bad people" try to... well, actually, I am not sure what these bad people are trying to do... stopping civilization from rebuilding won't help them either... While most of the book was slow and drawn out, I plodded on, realizing this is the 1st in a series, and I should expect a lot of fluff and filler, in order to leave enough material for later installments. By the last 1/4 of the book, though, things picked up considerably, and it had me turning the pages to see what happens. At the end, it left me looking forward to the next volume. A plague, call The Doom, erupts in Scotland and quickly crosses the world killing billions. Some people are immune and others get new or enhanced magical powers. As with any disaster there are those looking for a scapegoat and the magicals, named The Uncanny, become the _target. The story follows 3 groups originating in NYC, all deciding to head west for various reasons. Max and Lana are witches who head to western PA to find his brother. Arlys, Chuck and Fred head for OH to find Arlys' family. Dr. Rachel, paramedic Jonah and Katie with 3 newborn babies just head out of the chaos looking for a safe place. All run into a variety of situations until they meet up about halfway through the book. Then survival and rebuilding become a focus, with ultimately a new set of problems and disasters. Exciting, great world building and beginning to a series. Very different for Roberts but her characters are typical of her style and her concepts fall in line with her past writings. Very good new direction. I have been losing interest in her trilogies lately, particularly the paranormal ones. The previous three couple interface in each volume seemed so forced keeping everyone up on the status of each other, so no character was unaware of a crucial piece of information to forward the plot. This works so much better because the characters can act independently while being part of a larger group. This is a nice story. I found parts of the plot and relationships and some of the exposition a bit simple, but pushing thru them before I took breaks was more effective than stopping at points I had issues with. Overall, I'm much more interested in 'what happens' than I am with writing issues. I've purchased Book 2 and looking forward to the Kindle and audio versions. The narration is excellent. no reviews | add a review

"A stunning new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author--an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magic, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives... It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed--and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river--or in the ones you know and love the most. As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive"-- No library descriptions found. |
