Not really a romance. The relationship is barely touched on. What this is, is a man coming to terms with a traumatic experience and the way his life could easily spiral out of control in an orgy of drink.
I actually found it quite depressing to read and the relationship, which should have been a bright spot and a symbol of hope, never quite felt that way.
