Not lies; simply the truths we don’t tell.” A slow moving, slow simmer kind of mystery. It bounced between two time frames - the now and the time when the MC was a young boy. It's interesting to piece through his childhood and his adult year and compare them - but it was also odd. Things that happened in his childhood seemed so odd and yet everyone around seemed like it was no big deal (I mean, the ride broke, right? and hurt that girl?) The pieces falling together was a bit convenient but it made sense when it was all put together. My only frustration with the story was that every chapter seemed to end with a bit of foreshadowing that I didn't necessarily need to keep reading. It distracted from the story - but otherwise I liked this one. What a stunning cover and I am a sucker for a good book cover . This is why I still favour paperbacks over Kindle or Audio. I enjoyed having this book on my bedside locker as the cover screams Read Me . Ok ! enough about the Book Cover, did the story live up to its quirky cover?............................YES, YES, YES ! . This one held my attention throughout and I really did enjoy this twisty, dark and suspenseful thriller and as a debut novel this one really does pack a punch and C. J. Tudor is certainly an author to watch in the future. image: " Looking back, it all started on the day of the fair and the terrible accident. When twelve year old Eddie first met the Chalk Man. It was the Chalk Man who gave Eddie the idea for the drawings a way to leave secret messages between his group of friends. And it was fun to start with until the figures led them to the body of a young girl" The novel is set in two time frames 1986 and 2016 and this work well as the suspense created at the beginning of the novel continues throughout. The colourful and complicated characters are well drawn if a little confusing at times with all the childhood nicknames but once I got them straight in my head I found the whole idea quirky and unique and really enjoyed this suspenseful read. I did especially like the ending of the novel............. Recommended to readers who enjoy thriller/crime novels. My thanks to Penguin for The BEAUTIFUL copy of this novel in return for an honest review. In 1986, twelve-year-old Eddie and his friends use drawing different colored chalk men as their secret code/messages to each other. Then, one day, a chalk man leads them to a dismembered body of a young girl in the woods. Years later, in 2016, Eddie receives a letter in the mail with a chalk stick figure on it. Eddie’s friends also get the same letter. Is the past coming back to haunt them? I liked the setting in the small English village of Anderbury. And I liked some of the 80’s references. The book was slow at times and the story didn’t always pull me in. I also didn’t care for most of the characters in the book. A so-so read by C. J. Tudor. no reviews | add a review

They follow the message, only to find the dead body of a teenage girl. In 2016, Eddie is nursing a drinking problem and trying to forget his past, until one day he gets a letter containing a chalk man—the same one he and his friends saw when they found the body. But digging into the past proves more dangerous than he could have known. Because in this town, everyone has secrets, no one is innocent, and some will do anything to bury the truth. Praise for The Chalk Man “Wonderfully creepy—like a cold blade on the back of your neck.”—Lee Child “An assured debut that alternates between 1986 and 2016 with unpredictable twists. The Chalk Man fits well with other stories about troubled childhoods such as Stephen King’s novella Stand by Me. . . . Tudor never misses a beat in showing each character as both a child and an adult while also exploring the foreboding environs of a small town.”—Associated Press “Utterly hypnotic. The Chalk Man is a dream novel, a book of nightmares: haunted and haunting, shot through with shadow and light—a story to quicken the pulse and freeze the blood. A dark star is born.”—A.J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window “If you can’t get enough of psychological thrillers with sharp twists and turns, you need to read The Chalk Man”—Hello Giggles “I haven’t had a sleepless night due to a book for a long time. The Chalk Man changed that.”—Fiona Barton, New York Times bestselling author of The Widow. No library descriptions found.
