Although it opened as a typical English elites in the Italian countryside genre novel, its closing is dark--not atypical for Forster. ( ) This was Forster’s first novel. It is short and could probably been better as a short story. Generally it was a conflict between social norms and being ruled by love. No one is satisfied with the end result and no one really deserved any thing different. I really didn’t care for the omniscient voice, very condescending. Not my cup of tea. An engaging read, but not his best novel. When the widow of his brother goes to Italy and becomes embroiled in a relationship with a younger man, Philip's haughty mother dispatches him to sort out the problem. Glad I read it (but not a keeper). I've still a couple of other Forster's to get to. [Howard's End] read several times is my favourite. no reviews | add a review
