While a few more questions about Stride’s past are answered, including some about his former lover, a whole load of new questions immediately appears to replace them. The scenery and setting for this chapter is also totally different from the ones in the previous chapters, and that is beginning to crystallize as one of the strengths of this serial for me. Each chapter has a unique feel, not just because of the events and revelations that take place, but also due to the widely different backgrounds these happen in. There was the rather dead planet Earth and Nibiru in the first and second books, the pirate ship in the third, and in the fourth we face endless snow. Some locations recur, like the planet Nibiru, but the general variety adds another exciting layer to this adventure.
Zero and Stride, after almost having emotionally connected in the last book, are thrown into close proximity here. Getting along on a physical level isn’t the problem for them, they have more than enough chemistry for an army of vampires between them. The challenge here is to build trust, and that almost does them in. I continue to hold my breath as I see these two alphas struggle with themselves and their inner demons as well as each other and each one’s need to be seen as strong and independent. I can only hope they’ll figure it out at some point!
If you like emotional roller coaster rides, you will probably like this book. If you are too scared to go on a real roller coaster ride, reading this series will bring you almost the same experiences – without you ever needing to leave the house. I for my part will make sure I am at home, ready to download the next chapter as soon as it becomes available!
