The best-selling survey of American literature from its beginnings to the present day is now brought to readers in an innovative revision. Here are the classic writers in the American tradition--from Wheatley and Franklin to Poe and Dickinson, to Cather, Hemingway, and Ellison. Here too are contemporary and newly recovered writers and traditions--from Native American Trickster tales to modernists Carlos Bulosan and Claude McKay, to contemporary authors Toni Morrison, Billy Collins, and Sandra Cisneros. Good collection of American literature. I like that there were a fair amount of more recent authors represented. There was also a good selection of Native American literature, both historical and contemporary. I know that early American literature is sparse, but I'm not sure all that nonfiction really belongs in a book focusing on literature. ( )

I originally purchased this book to help me study for the CLEP American Literature exam. I didn't read this from cover to cover but it did help me pass the exam. Along with that it helped me fine tune my appreciation for great American writers. Now when I am looking for a new author to read I reference my trusty anthology to find a classic author to read up on. This book is definitely packed to the brim with great authors and a lot of information. ( )
