I'm not quite sure how I heard about this book but it probably had something to do with the fact that it is set in Nova Scotia that attracted my attention. And the fact that it is set during World War II would have also been a factor. I found it rather a light read but it does have a basis in historical fact and that is certainly worth knowing. Grace Baker lives on the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia with her parents and three brothers. Her parents were in Halifax during the horrendous Halifax Explosion and they rescued three boys who were left orphaned by the explosion. Grace was born after the family moved out of Halifax to start a fish cannery. Now World War II has started and all three boys have signed up, one in the army, one in the navy and one in the merchant navy. Grace stays at home working at the local general store and trying not to worry too much about her brothers. She and her best friend Linda attend a local dance one night and an attractive stranger asks her to dance. She doesn't learn his name but she can't put him out of her mind. He is, in fact, a German sailor named Rudi from a U-boat that is tasked with setting up a spying location on an out of the way island. When the U-boat is seen and bombed he survives but it appears that none of the other crew has. Rudi knows he has to get away so he walks through the woods until he finds a hunting cabin deep in the woods. Using skills he learned from his father he traps and fishes. When he has some pelts to sell he takes them into town and there he meets Grace again. On a stormy night Rudi saves Grace's young cousin Tommy from drowning near the cabin. He then has to take Tommy home because his feet have frostbite. Grace's family agrees that Rudi can stay in hiding with them. At first Grace is shocked that Rudi was a Nazi but soon their mutual attraction resurfaces. Rudi works hard and his past is all but forgotten until Grace's friend Linda sees him and Grace together. German spies are supposed to be reported and Linda may do so. There apparently was a group of men from a U-Boat that attended a community dance during the war. It seems far-fetched but then truth is stranger than fiction. no reviews | add a review
From the bestselling author of Tides of Honour and Promises to Keep comes a poignant novel about a young couple caught on opposite sides of the Second World War.In the fall of 1939, Grace Baker's three brothers, sharp and proud in their uniforms, board Canadian ships headed for a faraway war. Grace stays behind, tending to the homefront and the general store that helps keep her small Nova Scotian community running. The war, everyone says, will be over before it starts. But three years later, the fighting rages on and rumours swirl about "wolf packs" of German U-Boats lurking in the deep waters along the shores of East Jeddore, a stone's throw from Grace's window. As the harsh realities of war come closer to home, Grace buries herself in her work at the store. Then, one day, a handsome stranger ventures into the store. He claims to be a trapper come from away, and as Grace gets to know him, she becomes enamoured by his gentle smile and thoughtful ways. But after a several weeks, she discovers that Rudi, her mysterious visitor, is not the lonely outsider he appears to be, but someone else entirely--someone not to be trusted. When a shocking truth about her family forces Grace to question everything she has so strongly believed, she realizes that she and Rudi have more in common than she had thought. And if Grace is to have a chance at love, she must not only choose a side, but take a stand. Come from Away is a mesmerizing story of love, shifting allegiances, and second chances, set against the tumultuous years of the Second World War. No library descriptions found.

"Come From Away" was set in Canada during WWII which I found interesting but there was too much focus on the romance between Rudi and Grace. The characters I liked were mainly men - Danny (Grace’s father), Rudi, Tommy (Grace’s cousin) and Grace’s older brothers. I wasn’t as keen on the female characters except for Grace, but she was a bit too sappy at times for my liking.
However, the story flowed well, the relationships between the members of Grace’s family were touching and I enjoyed following their everyday lives. There was little action or suspense, but "Come From Away" was still an enjoyable read. ( )
