Loading... Club Deadby Charlaine HarrisAfter a long period of distance between Sookie and Bill, he informs her he has to go off on business and may be gone awhile. He also tells her what to do if he is not back in a certain time. Feeling deserted, Sookie mopes but carries on until Eric shows up saying Bill went back to an old love and then disappeared and he thinks kidnapped for the project he's been working on. Sookie agrees to go to Jackson, MS and see if she can use her telepathic skills to find him. She gets a bodyguard and a werewolf to get her into the Vampire club. Of course things don't go as planned and there are plenty of baddies. Good volume in the series. ( ) Probably my favorite Sookie book so far. The clothes the author puts Sookie in continue to horrify and delight (she's 26 and un-ironically excited to wear a Christmas sweater with reindeer on it? Her dress has sleeves, but no shoulders? Is it possible this was written in 1992?), but it only makes the whole series more fun at this point. I'm especially glad she's on the outs with Bill in this one because he is BORING. Another quick and diverting read. I have to say though, I'm enjoying the peripheral characters a lot more than Sookie and Bill. One can only take so much relationship angst. ;) I did really enjoy getting to 'meet' Alcide and spend more time with Bubba and Eric. Hoping that we get to see more of Pam in the coming books. Her interactions with Sookie are really a lot of fun. Sookie Stackhouse is drawn deeper into the machinations of vampiric politics and hidden agendas. Due to her own insecurities and desires she finds herself wide open, vulnerable and unable to do anything else other than their bidding. She takes what she can get while seeking to answer all the questions she has kept in her head and begins to wonder if it is better to be alive, dead, undead or subjugated by all three. Club Dead 4 Stars When her vampire boyfriend goes missing on a mysterious business trip, Sookie Stackhouse is shocked and saddened to learn that her relationship with Bill is not what she believed it to be. Determined to track him down and give him a piece of her mind, Sookie enlists the aid of enigmatic vampire boss, Eric Northam, who sends her to Jackson, Mississippi to learn what she can from the local supernaturals at their sinister stomping grounds known as Club Dead. Although there are a host of new characters to keep track of in this installment, including a variety of vampires, werewolves, shifters and goblins, the plot is more cohesive with one storyline that is easy enough to follow. As in the previous books, Sookie finds herself in some dicey situations, but manages to hold her own and even comes out on top despite being on the receiving end of stakes, fists and fangs. In the romance department, it would seem that unlike human males, who view her as strange and unappealing, Sookie is like Catnip to supernatural men. Whether it is Bill or Eric or Alcide Herveaux, her charming traveling companion, Sookie is popular with vampires and werewolves alike. While Alcide's gentle, caring and protective nature (not to mention his heartbeat) gives him an advantage over Eric, the alpha-vampire is exceedingly sexy and also appears to be developing an emotional attachment to sweet Sookie. Regardless, both of these men are much more suitable love interests than the self-absorbed and slightly smarmy Bill. In sum, this book clearly indicates that Harris is shifting focus away from Sookie and Bill's less than appealing attachment, and the new direction opens up far more intriguing avenues both for storylines and character development. Looking forward to the next book in which readers apparently learn more about Eric. OK, it's RIME of the Ancient Mariner not Rhyme. Booooo...a writer should know better. Too romance-y for me. But I have the next one and didn't hate the book and it's a quick read and good for the beach when there are loud drunken idiots nearby and you need something that doesn't take great concentration. I am reading this series at the behest of my sister who loves it. I liked this one more than the previous three (and the inclusion of Alcide the werewolf). One thing that always bugs me about similar series is how the main character is inexplicably irresistible to men- all the guys she comes in contact with just seem to fall in love with her. I know, I know, without such the stories would probably be rather boring... The end of this book did make me smile though. If you like vampire stories or are fans of TrueBlood, you should give this series a try. Very easy and fast reads. Why did I continue with this? 1) As I said before, it works well while cleaning, hanging up clothes etc. and 2) I am really bad at just canceling books or series. I enjoyed this book more than the one before, because Bill's not in it for the most part. That's a great improvement. When he shows up again, things get worse. The story is still really rape-y and I cannot press this enough: THIS IS NOT ROMANTIC BEHAVIOUR! Please, if you have little experience with relationships and read this book, know this: NOBODY is allowed to do sexual things to you against your will and you are right to hate them afterwards, not love them. Abusing you is not a sign of love or affection, it is a warning sign that you should get out of there while you still can. You owe NOBODY affection just because they say nice things, but do bad things. Abuse is not counterbalanced by nice things. I don't get why Bill is supposed to be the good guy in this. He is nothing but an asshole to Sookie (see above) and when he's not, he's super possessive and it's romanticized. That's one thing this book is perfect for: As an example in self-help classes for victims of abusive relationships. No sarcasm here, I totally mean that. Everybody is really hormonal, to the point where you get the impression that the protagonists are not adults or ancient vampires, but teenagers. Seriously, why would 2000-year old vampires act like teens? Do they evolve in reverse? Except Pam. I like Pam. She seems to be the only normal named character. The solution of the plot was as lazy and disappointing (or... anticlimactic) than in the book before. It was a good story with great potential, but in the end I was left thinking "Is everyone here very stupid?" From people/vampires, who are described as witty, intellligent, scheming etc., I would expect more. I am still searching for a good urban fantasy book series with vampires, but without romanticized rape and abuse. Plus, if not every named character falls in love with the heroine, who is intelligent, except for when she isn't, because she needs to be saved. Notes: This is, for now, my favourite book in the series and it's not a coincidence that Bill goes missing for the most of it. I'm quite torn about this series since, while I like the stories a lot and I'm curious about what'll happen next, I can't stand very much 2 of the major characters: Sookie & Bill. I find both of them quite annoying & their relationship just doesn't trasmit me anything...however for 2 I don't like there are some I love! First of all Eric that I liked from the start and that I find a very interesting character with his complex personality (moreover he's HOT!!!), then his two sidekicks Pam & Chow who at least have some sort of self control in front of Sookie's "charm"...cause I don't understand why all the guys fall in love/lust with her (and maybe i'm a little jelous too)! In the end i know I'll continue to read this series because I'd like to know where the story will go (hoping in some changes along the way) but it probably would never been one of my fav series in the genre even if there were the premises for being just that. Once again, Charlaine Harris is successful in making Sookie Stackhouse interesting. This book wasn't my favorite but I did like the new characters and especially the little romance happening between Sookie and Eric. This book left the series in such a state that I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and I'm pretty sure it's going to stay interesting with all the new characters and plot twists in this series. The best part of this book was when Sookie finally saw that Bill wasn't the good guy she thought he was.... This book is what started my hatred for Bill... he's such a poser and a fake, granted he was blood deprived and stuff, but that's basically like saying "I was too drunk to know better" But Sookie being her naive self doesn't realize this and still after the rape occurred she semi forgave him. What A complete idiot, I don't care what condition he was in if he would have done that to me I would cold clocked him right in his man parts until he passed out. lol |
