Since my collaborator and friend J. Bryan III, has done the larger share of this book, it has fallen to me to relate how our collaboration began and why we have told the story of the Windsors as we have.

The British journalist and critic Alastair Forbes, writing about the Duchess of Windsor in The Times Literary Supplement, November 1, 1974, made this observation: "She can be said to come from a far higher social stratum than, say, Princess Grace of Monaco, Jacqueline Bouvier (Kennedy Onassis) or the Jerome or Vanderbilt ladies of the nineteenth century."
