The mountain symbolizes a bigger concept other than just being obnoxious and annoying. The mountain comparing it to our own life's mirrors people we might know. Sometimes people love to be talkative, outgoing, they just love being social. However, being too social can drive people crazy and away. That's exactly what we see going on with Jumbra, until he meets Bumperboy and become good friends. A boy and his dog have the ability to travel to different worlds and have adventures. In this book, Bumperboy travels to a place with one loud, lonely mountain and seemingly no other occupants. I love the adorable comic-style illustrations, with thick lines and cute faces. This would definitely be a great book to use with a struggling reader, as it has extra picture support, is engaging and fun, and looks long like a chapter book. This book reminded me of a "super hero" book for young kids, aside from the Marvel comics type things. It also reminded me of something you'd see for a children's TV show, based off the illustrations and story line. This second book of the Bumperboy graphic novel series focuses on Bumperboys and Bumperdogs trip to a new type of world through a bumperhole that leads to a very loud talking mountain. The mountain, Jumba, is very lonely because the town that used to be at the base of him is no longer there because the village people thought the reason some of their members were going deaf was because of how loud he spoke. Jumba likes to talk. Bumperdog finds some marshmellow like creatures behind Jumba and soon Bumperboy and Bumperdog go on a search to find out more information about these creatures, and Jumba the mountain. They find out that the creatures are Grums, and they take care of the Grum trees which keep the mountains alive. Only one tree remains which resides on the back of Jumba which is why he's the only mountain there that is alive and talking. There's only 5 Grums alive there and it takes 5 for just one tree to stay alive. Bumperboy and Bumperdog go after a guy who takes a Grum and find out he's using the Grums to keep alive the Grum trees and produce the Grum fruit for his super sugary cola drink. At the end of the book with a plan put together Bumperboy and Bumperdog get all the Grums from the cola factory back to the mountain and they plant and keep alive a bunch more Grum trees which results in the other 5 mountains coming back to life, giving Jumba more people to talk to so he isn't lonely. Summary- Bumperboy and his dog are on a adventure when they meet a loud talking mountain. They discover small creatures called grums living behind the mountain. The grums are slaves to a man using the fruit of grum trees to make sugared drinks. Bumperboy and bumperpup help to free the grums and plant more grum trees in order to ensure the health of the talking mountain. Strength- Male Audience This book has a lot of action and suspense. It would a great book for a boy who is having trouble finding a catchy book to read. The action of the story caught my attention and I think it would catch the attention for many boys too. Use with Children- This would be a great book for independent, at school, reading. It is a catchy story that would ensure kids would actually be reading during their SSR time.
The comfortable pacing is a large part of this book’s charm. Nothing’s hurried, yet there’s a sense of wonder and “what happens next?” throughout. Belongs to SeriesBumperboy (2) Distinctions
