No current Talk conversations about this book. 3.5 stars - the chapter about studying and the one about their superhero comic were the best. He's really a terrific writer, and what a delight to inhabit Rowley's world for a little bit (especially during these troubled times, as the news is 24/7 Covid-19 coronavirus). I laughed out loud several times, which is highly unusual for me (I like laughing, but most books don't quite surprise and delight enough to initiate it—and I strongly suspect when many others write "LOL" they aren't, not really). Seamless integration of text and pictures. Disturbing (and hilarious) view of Greg from someone who's not Greg. And Rowley remains awesome and friendly (and optimistic, hardworking, and kind) throughout. (Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve! Recommended Ages: Gr. Plot Summary: Rowley isn't going to tell his best friend Greg that he's also starting a diary (ehem, journal) but he is. He wants a book about him, but when Greg finds out, he convinces Rowley to talk about how they're best friends so it ends up being a bunch of short stories from their "friendship." Example of Greg being a jerk: Greg convinces Rowley to do a bunch of chores for him by giving him awards that he draws and Rowley is a fool for believing they're special. There are lots more examples. Setting: Characters: Recurring Themes: Controversial Issues: Personal Thoughts: I'll admit this is the first Wimpy Kid book I read and I hated it. Greg is a HUGE jerk and Rowley is a complete fool for thinking they're friends. I really hope the other books aren't like this. Genre: realistic, humor?
