The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, while not perfect, plays an integral role in the Hunger Games series by granting Snow's character greater depth, revealing his motives and backstory, and raising interesting questions about morality and justice. To me, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is not overly remarkable on its own in the same way that the original Hunger Games novel is, but it adds so much to the original trilogy and transforms Snow from an antagonist who I found only mildly interesting to one who is fascinating and deeply tragic. It is certainly worth a read for those reasons; it just does not reach the same thematic heights as the rest of the series in my opinion. It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined, every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute, and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes. No library descriptions found.

I couldn't decide whether to like Snow or not at the beginning. There was empathy for his situation and hardships. But over the course of the book my empathy slipped away until finally the villain was wholly revealed in all his misery. ( )
