Fiction. Science Fiction. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

The critically acclaimed author of Lovecraft Country returns with a thrilling and immersive virtual reality epic—part cyberthriller, part twisted romantic comedy—that transports you to a world where identity is fluid and nothing can be taken at face value.

John Chu is a "sherpa"—a paid guide to online role-playing games like the popular Call to Wizardry. For a fee, he and his crew will provide you with a top-flight character equipped with the best weapons and armor, and take you dragon-slaying in the Realms of Asgarth, hunting rogue starships in the Alpha Sector, or battling hordes of undead in the zombie apocalypse.

Chu's new client, the pseudonymous Mr. Jones, claims to be a "wealthy, famous person" with powerful enemies, and he's offering a ridiculous amount of money for a comprehensive tour of the world of virtual-reality gaming. For Chu, this is a dream assignment, but as the tour gets underway, he begins to suspect that Mr. Jones is really North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, whose interest in VR gaming has more to do with power than entertainment. As if that weren't enough to deal with, Chu also has to worry about "Ms. Pang," who may or may not be an agent of the People's Republic of China, and his angry ex-girlfriend, Darla Jean Covington, who isn't the type to let an international intrigue get in the way of her own plans for revenge.

What begins as a whirlwind online adventure soon spills over into the real world. Now Chu must use every trick and resource at his disposal to stay one step ahead—because in real life, there is no reset button.

This was a hard one to rate, 3.5 is closer to how I feel about it. One of the things I look for in my books is character development and I did't get that here. In my opinion the main character is a low level a-hole who has a lot of technical know how but little in the way of social skills, so already I am not in love with this type of character but that's fine not every protagonist needs to be a 'hero' type. My peeve is more that by the end of the story he hasn't changed in any way. He doesn't perform any kind of self evaluation and think "hey I was in the wrong and I shouldn't have done that 'thing' and I have learned a lesson and will now do things differently". Maybe that is fine, consistent with his personality but that combined with the very slow pacing killed a lot of my enjoyment. Plus I predicted somewhat early on the plot twist. On the other hand I think that the author did a superb job having the character explain about MMPORGs and all aspects of VR gaming. It is clear to me that he (author) did a lot of research to both make it accurate and as easy to understand for new noobs like me. The writing was clear and concise. I will continue to follow this author as I absolutely loved 'Lovecraft Country' this book was written well it just wasn't for me. ( )

What if there was the virtual world adventure of Ready Player One, but when there's a nerd culture reference it's actually used as a gatekeeping reference, and not as the basis of the entire plot? I mean, I loved Ready Player One, but I've also met a lot of gamer guys who think knowing pop culture trivia is the same thing as having a personality, so...

88 Names is about an MMORPG sherpa, John Chu. He and his team help gamer tourists through exciting boss battles and virtual adventures, for a fee. When they get a bizarre new client, with no virtual footprint and way too much cash, John can't help investigating, and the nerd mystery takes us everywhere from North Korea to text-based muds.
