"An engaging look at how the animals, people, and seasons within an ecosystem are intertwined. To the Gitxsan people of Northwestern British Columbia, the grizzly is an integral part of the natural landscape. Together, they share the land and forests that the Skeena River runs through, as well as the sockeye salmon within it. Follow mother bear as she teaches her cubs what they need to survive on their own. The Mothers of Xsan series uses striking illustration and lyrical language to bring the poetry of the Xsan ecosystem to life."--… (more)

Book is about the journey of a mother grizzly bear and her cubs through the hibernation and the summers.
The author specifies a tribal nation, the Gitxsan Nation and it is relevant to the book because their territory or where they lived is the same as the grizzly bears in the book.

This book would be good for grades 2-4 because it has more difficult language than K or 1st could understand. This book is about a mother bear and her journey with her cubs in the wilderness after hibernation. The author uses authenticity when writing this book as he includes accurate information about customs and native peoples. This book also have respectful language in association with Native American tribes and their traditions.

A good age rating for this book would be 1st-5th grade. It covers the wakening of a mother grizzly bear and her cubs and how they share the land and find food as the seasons change. This book introduces authenticity to the Gitxsan Nation and their moons. This is shown by how they indicate the change in seasons by labeling the Moons in the Gitxsan language and the English translation.

Approved by Debbie Reese in part because the name used for the Native people is their own, and only secondarily is their a reference to their 'colonial name.' Also Beverly gave it five stars.

Beautifully illustrated, this story follows Mother Grizzly and her cubs through the seasons on the shared land of the Gitxsan people of British Columbia. Written by #OwnVoices Gitxsan member Gyetxw Hetxw'ms (Brett D. Huson), we learn about the life cycle of the Grizzly as well as the connectedness of the Gitxsan to their land. Gitxsan words are introduced throughout the book, although the lack of a pronunciation guide makes it difficult to share the language while you are reading it. The book follows the equally appealing, The Sockeye Mother (Mothers of Xsan). American Indian Youth Literature Award Honor Title. ( )

An excellent addition to curriculums that tie scientific principles to cultural practices: the work should be embraced by libraries to help educate readers about the Gitxsan.
