From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes a new emotional and riveting standalone love story.

One night, eight years ago, she gave me peace.
No names.
No promises.
Just two broken people, desperate to quiet their pain and grief.

In the morning, she was gone and had taken my solace with her. I left for the military that day, vowing never to return to Pennsylvania.

When my father dies, I'm forced to go home to bury him. At least I'll finally be rid of his farm, which is grown over and tangled with memories I've fought to forget.

And that's when I find her. She's even more beautiful than I remember and has the most adorable kid I've ever seen.

Years have passed, but my feelings are the same, and this time I refuse to let her go. They say you can't bury the past, and they're right. Because when long-ago secrets are exposed, rocking us both to the core, I have no choice but to watch her walk away again . . .

This is a quick read that was recommended to me. I like that the book is told from both Connor and Ellie's perspectives. Both have suffered from domestic abuse and have a daughter from one night together eight years ago, though Ellie married soon after and Connor has been away with the Navy Seals. It's somewhat slow and fairly predictable though I was taken by surprise by a twist later in the book. It's okay but didn't really click with me. ( )

This review will most likely be unpopular.
I don't seem to quite connect with this author.

I can see that the circumstances are written to be a moving story as it deals with a violent parent/ husband but I just felt it was contrived and predictable.

The heroines actions, she sleeps with the Hero, leaves before they exchange names and then the next day marries a man who ends up being violent and controlling.

The Hero returns 8 years after his ONS to his home, after still dreaming of the girl he met all those years ago.
When he gets back he meets a child, no suprise it's his daughter, as the girl is living next door, big snag she's married.

There is technically no cheating as they wait for her divorce to have sex though they are definitely emotionally involved but it's okay cos her husband is abusive and she's finally made a decision to leave just as the Hero turns up on the scene, why she choose that day to leave and didn't feel he was too much of a danger to her daughter before that point I'm not sure.

And the daughter turning out to be his, fancy that, even though she slept with the man who is now her husband the next day.

I just felt it was contrived.
I'm not meaning to demean the effects of abuse but this didn't work for me.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.

HEA.

Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series about the brothers, groundwork laid for next book.
