Ellery Adams is my favorite cozy mystery writer and the Secret, Book and Scone Society is an excellent series. Set in Miracle Springs, in the mountains of North Carolina, it focuses on Nora Pennington and her friends, women who have come to the town with secrets. They have shared them and then used the pain to extend love and support to others. Their relationships form an important part of the series and they are often involved with others whose secrets are causing them pain and trauma. There can be some darkness in this series because of that underlying theme but I have enjoyed it as much as any of the others. Words cannot express my love for the worlds that Ellery Adams' creates. There hasn't been one book of hers that I haven't devoured. Or one perfectly flawed protagonist that I haven't felt a connection to. This is the fourth book in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society. It is one of the most powerful yet. Powerful women. Magic women. Women of words. Fourth in the series. This entry lacked the undercurrent of magical realism that makes the earlier volumes "pop", but it still tells a strong story. Some of the subplots are unartfully handled (Nora's refusal to go to help Jed was too quickly smoothed over; the book protestors also fizzled unrealistically), but the through line of the main narrative was nicely done. no reviews | add a review

Nora Pennington is known for her window displays, and as Halloween approaches, she decides to showcase fictional heroines like Roald Dahl's Matilda and Madeline Miller's Circe. A family-values group disapproves of the magical themes, though, and wastes no time launching a modern-day witch hunt. Suddenly, former friends and customers are _targeting not only Nora and Miracle Books, but a new shopkeeper, Celeste, who's been selling CBD oil products. Nora and her friends in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society are doing their best to put an end to the strife—but then someone puts an end to a life. Though the death is declared an accident, the ruling can't explain the old book page covered with strange symbols and disturbing drawings left under Nora's doormat, a postcard from an anonymous stalker, or multiple cases of vandalism. The only hope is that Nora can be a heroine herself and lead the Secret, Book, and Scone Society in a successful investigation—before more bodies turn up and the secrets from Celeste's past come back to haunt them all... It is a cozy mystery that takes place in a small North Carolina mountain town. The main character "Nora" is a book lover and bookstore owner which is a plus for me. The friendships touch your heart. The bad people keep you irritated. And the mysteries keep you guessing. It is the right balance for an enjoyable read. Thank you Goodreads and Kensington Books for this free book.
Loved it just as much my second time reading. ( )
