“A roadmap on the journey to truth and authenticity… [The Way of Integrity] is filled with aha moments and practical exercises that can guide us as we seek enlightenment.” –Oprah Winfrey
Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck explains why “integrity”—needed now more than ever in these tumultuous times—is the key to a meaningful and joyful life

As Martha Beck says in her book, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.”
In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, and with it, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.
Inspired by The Divine Comedy, Beck uses Dante’s classic hero’s journey as a framework to break down the process of attaining personal integrity into small, manageable steps. She shows how to read our internal signals that lead us towards our true path, and to recognize what we actually yearn for versus what our culture sells us.
With techniques tested on hundreds of her clients, Beck brings her expertise as a social scientist, life coach and human being to help readers to uncover what integrity looks like in their own lives. She takes us on a spiritual adventure that not only will change the direction of our lives, but also bring us to a place of genuine happiness.

I want to state upfront that I'm a big Martha Beck fan. I've read all her books, many of which are on my keeper shelf.

With The Way of Integrity, Beck returns to a topic she's previously covered numerous times. Here, she takes a different approach by deeply analyzing Dante's Divine Comedy and making parallels to the journey toward self-growth and self-actualization.

Ultimately, I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I appreciated the parallels Beck drew between inner growth and development and Dante's journey in his epic poem. I was particularly captivated by the earlier chapters in the sections on The Dark Wood of Error and the Inferno. I thought the chapters in the Purgatory and Paradise sections were less successful, and I found my eyes glazing over and my attention wandering.

I may not be the _target audience here, as I already have a deep well of knowledge to draw on when it comes to thought work and personal development. However, someone new to these concepts would greatly benefit from reading this book. ( )

In this work Beck is by turns literary critic and personal growth coach as she does her own close reading of Dante's epic work The Divine Comedy in service of her goal. With Dante's classic as a framework or sort of map, Beck guides the reader gently and inexorably toward their own "paradise", living life as one's true self.

To illustrate and enliven the writing, she shares her own experiences and stories from her coaching clients. Almost every page of the book (loaned to me!) now has underlined sentences, circled words, or BOOM written in the margin. Short exercises are doable, wise, and surprising. I'll be re-reading this one. ( )

This book really resonated with me. I love Martha's work and this takes it to the next level. She's been doing a workshop with this name for many years but I never felt compelled to take it. The time is now. I love the suggested activities in the book and will be using them in my own journey to be in greater integrity. ( )
