Each of the "14 questions for humans" is printed on the verso in black text on a white background; on the recto, a full-bleed illustration shows a scene from nature, with prominence given to plants and landscape; animals and people are drawn very small and with little detail, emphasizing the contrast in size and importance. The illustrations are predominately in blues and greens, with one cool gray and white winter scene, and a few pale lemon and pink sunrises/sunsets. Scenes showing how humans have hurt the earth (clear-cutting forests; building dense, polluting cities) are dominated by dark gray and alarming reds.

Back matter includes an author's note, asking, "How do we know how Earth feels?" and discussing how we might extend the empathy we feel for other humans to the planet. Thought-provoking and discussion-encouraging. ( )
