This is the second book I’ve read in the “Married to Magic” series and I’m not sure why but I do enjoy these stories. They have a Hades-Persephone theme along with forced to marry plots. In this one, human forge maiden Floriane is kidnapped by her sworn enemy the vampire lord Ruvan in a desperate attempt to break a curse that is killing both of their people. I’ll try not to spoil the story here. Flor was more outspoken and combative than I found Luella to be from “A Deal with the Elf King”, which I really appreciated. I don’t care for the waning damsel bit in fantasy romances. Flor was a fighter and the scenes of her and her vampir band of survivors fighting off the Succumb was the best part of the book for me. I wanted more of that action. I also felt the miscommunication between Flor and Ruvan was a bit contrived (to the point one of the other characters even calls it out) but it is a common theme for drama in romance stories. My biggest issue with the book, and what kept it from being a 3 star, was the ending. Flor spent the entire book trying to discover her own destiny and not the fate everyone else has laid out for her, and one of those things she wanted was to be accepted for who she was - a human woman. Not the Forge Maiden, not a Hunter, not the enemy. Just herself. Ruvan tells her flat out the vampires will never accept a human in a relationship with a vampire, even though they are married and his vampire covenant has accepted her. Well, if you read the book (or can guess where this is going) you’ll understand why Flor’s fate left a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve heard there’s a siren and pirate book on the way, and despite my misgivings, I’m definitely going to read it. 😅 Elise Kova is just a fantastic author. ( ) I wasn't quite into this one as much as the others. It was supposed to be a snow-white twist but I didn't get that. As someone who did all the big vampire phases, I guess I was a little over them and didn't care for this one as much as the others. But it was good writing and a good overall plotline. Elise Kova's A Duel with a Vampire Lord is entertaining and alluring. From the moody, atmospheric setting of Hunter's Hamlet, where hope seems distant, to the deeply textured world of Midscape, Kova continues to impress. Floriane, the forge maiden, isn't just your typical hero; she's full of determination and resilience, braving her destiny and its challenges. It's not just her blacksmithing skills that make her essential, but her unwavering spirit that makes her unforgettable. I loved that in the world of Midscape, vampires (vampir) are not wired to be vicious monsters, but rather they are a kind species and one of the most vulnerable in Midscape. Ruvan, the mysterious vampire lord, is a testament to that. Though I wanted more depth from his character initially, his coldness melting into vulnerability with Flor made it worth the wait. I really came to love Ruvan 🥰. A Duel with a Vampire Lord was a gripping read that wrapped up nicely, giving me all the feel-good feels! 4 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. 3.5 ⭐️ I really enjoyed reading this one! It took me a very long time to get through considering it’s not very long or hard to read. I liked this one better than the second one because it was a mystery type story. I just wanted to find out how everything had gotten to the point it was at in the book. So I was definitely invested the entire time I was reading it. I would like to give it a solid 4 stars but there were a lot of typos and it really just needed another few rounds of grammatical editing done to it. Other than that I think it was a great book. no reviews | add a review
