Ladies can be either.” Slow burn, dual time-line mystery. Two women, Shea and Beth, meet and begin talking about Beth's life. Unsolved murder mysteries in a small town, most people think Beth is to blame. Shea is a small town blogger with a day job and can't believe her good luck to be the one person Beth will talk to. I loved the small town feel, the jumping back and forth in time and the mutual respect between the two women. Beth was a mystery through the whole story and you can't help but wonder about her guilt and innocence. And I love how this author can keep me glued to the page. I'm always kept wondering what's really going on and who all knows what. I loved the feel of the past having such a presence and the house feeling so ominious. Another great read. I loved it! Shea Collins was nearly abducted, raped and killed when she was 9, but managed to escape but not mentally undamaged. 20 years later she is running a true crime website in the hours she is not working at a receptionist position. She is currently focused on a case in her home town that is unsolved after 40 years and where the only suspect, who was acquitted, still lives in a mostly reclusive mansion. When that women shows up at the doctor's office where she works, Shea follows her when she leaves and they make contact, resulting in Shea being invited to interview Beth Greer. So begins a push pull relation ship filled with half truths or possible lies. It is up to Shea to figure it out and to determine why Beth has drawn her in in the first place. Often has the feel of a Twilight Zone episode. I was disappointed at various plot devices and the ending. OK read. no reviews | add a review

"A true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings in this chilling new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel. In 1977, Claire Lake, Oregon, was shaken by the Lady Killer Murders: Two men, seemingly randomly, were murdered with the same gun, with strange notes left behind. Beth Greer was the perfect suspect-a rich, eccentric twenty-three-year-old woman, seen fleeing one of the crimes. But she was acquitted, and she retreated to the isolation of her mansion. Oregon, 2017. Shea Collins is a receptionist, but by night, she runs a true crime website, the Book of Cold Cases-a passion fueled by the attempted abduction she escaped as a child. When she meets Beth by chance, Shea asks her for an interview. To Shea's surprise, Beth says yes. They meet regularly at Beth's mansion, though Shea is never comfortable there. Items move when she's not looking, and she could swear she's seen a small girl outside the window. The allure of learning the truth about the case from the smart, charming Beth is too much to resist, but even as they grow closer, Shea senses something isn't right. Is she making friends with a manipulative murderer, or are there other dangers lurking in the darkness of the Greer house?"-- No library descriptions found. |

I figured out the twist half about half way in, however, I don't like that premise of the mystery. It felt off - as if it the author was comparing two things that didn't quite go together. Over all, it kept my attention and it was a quick read. ( )
