I enjoy Tarryn Fisher’s fast paced thrillers and An Honest Lie, was another great read for me by her. I am so fascinated by cults and what could possibly lead them there; however, in this book the reason this mother and daughter showed up was unlike many others. I wasn’t sure what type of cult it was, because it was very similar sounding to many polygamists compounds. Summer as a child growing up thought her mom was a fool for disrespecting the leader and the man who saved them. However, she soon realizes that may have been a mistake. Told in two different timelines from Summer’s childhood to now as a renewed version of herself taking a girls trips with her boyfriends friends wives. 4 times I wanted to stop reading this book but I push through cause I was stuck on boat with no other book. took my will power not to throw it overboard but then I have to pay my public library money for fee. I REALLY wanted to like this book. I thoroughly enjoyed The Wives by the same author, but this book was a letdown. I know I’m in the minority here with my opinion, but alas, it is just my opinion. After reading the last few thrillers that started off with a bang, this one started off slow and boring and basically stayed that way for most of the book. At around 65% of the book things got a little better, but then that quickly tapered off as everything just felt drawn out. The ending was equally as bad. While there was a resolution, it was rushed in a 2-3 page. This book was really lackluster. This is only the second time I’ve had to give a 1-star rating but c’monnnnnn. I love TF and loved The Wives - but what happened ?? First chapter is ok: my thoughts- she’s building the characters - next chapter - showing her relationship ok. I’m bored still, but hoping it picks up. It does not. I read a little over 100 pages and have stopped. Not an ounce of suspense, edge-of-your-seat, thriller. Not interesting, completely boring, plot is just. Idk won’t spoil it if others want to read it but whaaaaat?!? Colleen Hoover says this book is a “riveting suspense,” Colleen, why you lying to your friend? I will still buy any new books by TF. She has the talent, this book just doesn’t showcase that. no reviews | add a review

Rainy and her mother go through a tough time and her mother takes her to meet Taured, a friend from years ago who has converted an abandoned prison into a community of people who have what he believes is a common goal. After a bunch of drama and trauma, Rainy tries to start a new life and eventually moves to live with her boyfriend across the country. Here she meets a group of girls...to call them all friends would be a stretch but she does have a connection with a few of them.
When they invite her to a trip to Vegas, she reluctantly decides to go. This is where the story really picks up. Vegas is not too far from Taureds 'compund' and she thinks she may have some unfinished business with him. But Taured is the least of her problems - she has someone from her past who is hell bent on seeking revenge, and when one of the girls from the trip ends up in trouble, even though it isn't one of Rainy's besties, she feels she has no choice but to help.
To be honest I did feel that the current storyline was a little thrown together as this story really relied so heavily on the past and what happened to Rainy and her mom. Still a solid read but just not my favorite. ( )
