Karen is really excited for the upcoming school pictures where she and her friends intend to look like "movie stars." But she keeps getting headaches at school and is struggling to read books with small print, so her family thinks she needs to see an eye doctor. Getting glasses is not something Karen wants to do, especially when a mean kid at school calls people names for wearing glasses.

This book continues in the vein of the rest of this series, with relatable but relatively simple problems. In this case, Karen has to deal both with adjusting to a change and with teasing. She learns to stand up for both herself and her bully! Her family is supportive and helpful, which is nice to see. I always appreciate how the Brewer family shows that blended families can work out just fine (even if I know unfortunately that isn't always the case in real life).

The illustrations are full of lots of energy and emotion. Young readers certainly do love this series and it's easy to see why. ( )

Karen's unhappy when it turns out she needs glasses just in time for school pictures. It's a fairly typical take on the subject, with reluctance to wear the glasses and teasing from a classmate all resolved in time for a happy ending, but I enjoyed it all the same. Karen seems more reasonable, perhaps because the book has jumped ahead to 2nd grade, and she has actually matured slightly.

If you are worried about spoilers, changes to the Brewer household are shown here that have not yet occurred in the main Baby-Sitters graphic novel series and do not occur in the novel series until book #24. Watson and Elizabeth adopt a Vietnamese baby, and Elizabeth's mother moves in with them to help out. ( )

   Hi, Ms. colman! Hello!

   Good morning, Karen.

It's Monday morning. Another week of school. Another week of friends and gym and stories. Some kids don't like school, but I do. There are a lot of things I like at school.
