It seems like a graphic novel done all in stream of consciousness. It goes from one thing to the next. It starts off with Rockstar wanting to throw a part so Softboy can get laid. They are two best friends and one is stylist and the other a videogame designer. Softboy cannot get his newest game finished, and Rockstar points out his need for tension release. So a party it is. One of the neat things about this book, was when they decided who was coming to the party and the ratio they needed to keep the party fun and everyone involved. Then it ends up becoming superheros to save the day. There were so many ideas in this book. Many that were started and dropped. The authors/artist even mentions it in the notes at the back. I wanted to like this, but still fell WTF did I just read. Sina Grace turns a real-life friendship into a nonsensical and absurd fantasy of gay BFFs with superpowers and a magical cat. The undeniable energy on the page just could not ignite my interest, and the humor of the story didn't do anything for me. But I did like the end matter where Grace talked about his friend Josh Trujillo and discussed the creation of the book. no reviews | add a review

Rockstar and Softboy, gay BFFs, are planning to throw the party of all parties, basically because Rockstar thinks Softboy needs to get laid. What ensues is a wild, pop culture-filled escapade involving zombies and vampires and fairies (oh my!), a sorcerer, the unintentional summoning of the mythical Party Beast, gay bestie superpowers, and a transmogrifying cat with all the sass. It’s fun, goofy, laugh out loud funny, and a perfect read for #pridemonth.
What I enjoyed the most in ROCKSTAR AND SOFTBOY, tho, was @sinagrace’s portrayal of Rockstar and Softboy’s friendship; they are totally in love with each other, but in a completely platonic way, and that’s ok. I think as a community, many queers have these types of friendships where you can’t imagine your life without that one particular person (or even a group of people, if you’re lucky to have found your tribe) who knows more about you than you probably do yourself (I know I do!). These people can be just as important, if not more so sometimes, than an actual romantic partner. This type of friendship is not always portrayed in many forms of media, and it’s refreshing to see Grace taking a pointed stance on showing this type of friendship and the importance behind it.
