#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride. Narrated by Michael Kramer.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I'm excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

I read Mistborn and Steelheart and, while there is something appealing about his writing, I am not a big Sanderson fan. This "secret project" novel promised to be something different and it was, but maybe not for the better. Narration by a non-main character is jarring when he breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the reader in first person. Sanderson describes his world-building in detail but only a fraction of it makes sense and captivates. The humor is often at an upper middle school level and the story has a fairy tale feel that seems more suitable to an audience of middle school readers. I actually appreciate that some characters are referred to under the collective name "Doug" because they simply aren't important enough to the story to be identified more fully. Fantasy books tend to have so many intricately-named characters who have no impact! I love a pirate story and the characters are likable. My main criticisms are the repetition of juvenile humor and the simplistic pearls of wisdom -- expressed through Hoid's narration -- about the human condition as Sanderson (presumably) sees it. Lastly, the audiobook narration is too sing-songy for my taste but is tolerable when played at 1.25 speed. ( )

This was my first Sanderson book - it will not be my last. It is a bit of a new genre to me, but that made it fun. I enjoyed the Princess Bride-like voice and appreciated the imagination it took to build the world and the structure - not to mention the care it took to implant the necessary prerequisites to solutions. Tress of the Emerald Sea takes place on a world with seas made of spores that have fallen from the planet's many moons. Through some quirk of physics, ships can actually traverse these spore seas as if they were water, but also, if the spores make contact with actual water (such as that contained by a human), they violently grow and cause mass destruction. While the book reads as fantasy, there are some characters that are explicitly space aliens, giving the sense this the world is some sort of backwater in galactic civilization. The story itself revolves around Tress, a girl who leaves her peasant live to chase down her childhood love, who has somehow been captured by the Sorceress--the most powerful and feared being on the planet. In doing so, she falls in with a pirate crew and survives using her intelligence and rare common sense (as the author repeatedly tells us). Mixing the unique world-building that Sanderson is known for with a pleasant tale of a hard-working heroine who is really good at thinking her way through problems is a winning combination here, and I found this to be a very nice read. Unfortunately, sympathy is not a valve, to be turned off when it starts to flood the yard. Indeed, the path to a life without empathy is a long and painful one, full of bartered humanity sold at a steep discount.
