I love this cover and it does such a good job of going with the story. There are three main women in this story, 3 timelines. They are broken up with chapters so it's easy to keep the timelines straight. It isn't clear, at first, how they all mingle and you just have to roll with the story to find where they all come together. But be aware, there is definitely violence in here. There's rape, physical domestic abuse and a lot of discussion around child birth and loss. It's a lot to take in and at times, it's very tough to read, but the story was so good I loved it more for it not shying from the ugly stuff. All in all, it's about the power of women and how we are so much more happy and peaceful when we are in harmony with other women around us, when we are allowed to be free and who we are. So for all the tough stuff, it was such a great story filled with rage and vengeance. I loved it! A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Thoughtful and at times harrowing, this novel is a successful blend of historical fiction and modern feminism. ...Three generations of women struggle against the bounds of patriarchy in this debut novel... an engaging novel that captures the ways patriarchy has sought to limit women for all of history and the ways women have found to carve out freedom for themselves. "2019: Under cover of darkness, Kate flees London for ramshackle Weyward Cottage, inherited from a great aunt she barely remembers. With its tumbling ivy and overgrown garden, the cottage is worlds away from the abusive partner who tormented Kate. But she begins to suspect that her great aunt had a secret. One that lurks in the bones of the cottage, hidden ever since the witch-hunts of the 17th century. 1619: Altha is awaiting trial for the murder of a local farmer who was stampeded to death by his herd. As a girl, Altha's mother taught her their magic, a kind not rooted in spell casting but in a deep knowledge of the natural world. But unusual women have always been deemed dangerous, and as the evidence for witchcraft is set out against Altha, she knows it will take all of her powers to maintain her freedom. 1942: As World War II rages, Violet is trapped in her family's grand, crumbling estate. Straitjacketed by societal convention, she longs for the robust education her brother receives--and for her mother, long deceased, who was rumored to have gone mad before her death. The only traces Violet has of her are a locket bearing the initial W and the word weyward scratched into the baseboard of her bedroom. Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries, Emilia Hart's Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world"-- No library descriptions found. |

Three separate timelines (1619, 1942, 2019), three separate women linked by blood and by the common sanctuary that each of them found in an English cottage called Weyward. Each timeline, each character kept me turning the pages. I wanted to know more about them. I wanted to know more about the cottage.
This was a very enjoyable reading experience, and an amazing debut novel. I'll be looking for more of Hart's writing. ( )
