In future the survival of mankind rests on a rare element which one space-faring family controls. Habitable planets with this element are rare and are being destroyed by some sort of fungus. Good world-building with a little too much introspection. Part 1/3. ( ) To be honest, though I've been aware of Megan O'Keefe for awhile, I've put off giving her work a shot as the back of the envelope summaries were not inspiring me to pick up her books. However, when I noticed some of the concepts she was playing with in this novel, I decided that now was the time. So, was I impressed? Maybe not, though I do credit O'Keefe with seriousness of purpose, as whatever else this novel is it can be read as a critique of our wannabe corporate overlords playing with the concept of empire in space. It also reflects the current fascination in the genre with parasitic impacts on human consciousness and behavior. Still, it didn't quite hang together for me and, of the fifty genre novels and novellas I've read this year, I have to admit that it fell pretty far down that list, more so than I might have thought. About my most positive response is that I'll probably give the second book a chance. Not bad! I can't say that I absolutely loved it, but it was a fairly good science fiction story with a surprising love story in the middle of it. I would rate it higher, but I think it was overly long and, in many places, felt very....perfunctory. It was just going through the motions and lingering so long in certain spots in the story. Decent read though, especially for an author I've never heard of. I liked this book a lot more than I thought I was going too. Tarquin is heir to planetary mining company, but he just wants to do his own thing and spend time studying. He ends up not having a choice and ends up on a ship stranded on a dying planet. There is a fungus that has been killing planets in the wake of the mining, and this one is now perishing as well. The stranded crew includes his bodyguard who has secrets, including her identity. There is plenty of action, angst, mystery, and character growth. It does end on a cliffhanger, but the other two books are out. no reviews | add a review
