A fugitive from Roshar with a dis-functional shardblade arrives on a strange planet, fleeing randomly from his pursuers. 'Nomad', the hero, finds himself on a planet so small and so close to the sun, that the invested sunlight melts everything it touches - people, the ground, everything. The people on this weird planet survive by flying just ahead of the sun, every day. Unfortunately the Cinder King wants to take over everyone and Nomad gets to be the one that prevents it. Nomad has a 'Torment', whatever that is, that prevents him from using his blade in a violent way - sometimes. Sanderson does some terrible things to people in this book, all in the name of this concept of a planet. Too harsh, too many words, too many convenient escapes and sidesteps. The characters weren't interesting enough and the concept bizarre in a bad way. B (Good). An interplanetary fugitive gets stuck on a dangerous planet. It's fast paced and action-packed. I had a good time. But the main character's magic (which is integral to his character arc) is convoluted and never clearly explained. I've read all the Cosmere books, but, I mean, I didn't memorize them. (Aug. 2024) no reviews | add a review

HTML: From the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time—#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel that combines fantasy and science fiction. Illustrated by Ernanda Souza, Nabeste Zitro, and kudriaken. Running. Putting distance between himself and the relentless Night Brigade has been Nomad's strategy for years. Staying one or two steps ahead of his pursuers by skipping through the Cosmere from one world to the next. But now, his powers too depleted to escape, Nomad finds himself trapped on Canticle, a planet that will kill anyone who doesn't keep moving. Fleeing the fires of a sunrise that melts the very stones, he is instantly caught up in the struggle between a heartless tyrant and the brave rebels who defy him. Failure means a quick death, incinerated by the sun...or a lifetime as a mindless slave. Tormented by the consequences of his past, Nomad must fight not only for his survival—but also for his very soul. Note from Brandon: And so this book is yours, as they all are once you read them. Thank you so much for bringing life to my work, and to the Cosmere. .No library descriptions found. |

I understood what Sanderson was trying to do with the pacing and it matched the theme of "always running" well, but a breakneck pace isn't my favorite style. He was able to fit in a good amount of character development for the way the story went, specifically with Nomad and Elegy. The main villain was a little more cookie-cutter than Sanderson's usual ones, though, and we didn't really learn as much about some of the other protagonists (i.e. Rebeke had some good character development, but we didn't learn much about her background, and we also didn't get much of a sense of personality from other minor characters like Zeal).
The tie-in to Threnody was pretty awesome--I haven't read the story from that planet yet that's in [b:Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection|28595941|Arcanum Unbounded The Cosmere Collection|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1466536615l/28595941._SY75_.jpg|48765829], so reading this as my first glimpse of the Threnodites was pretty cool.
I would really love to know how *ahem*Nomad*ahem* became both a Windrunner and a Skybreaker and how he walked away from his oaths. I've pre-ordered it, so we'll see! ( )
