I didn't know that this was going to be an abduction/hostage narrative, so that was a bit heavy, especially the first parts with the son and mother. I liked the way trauma responses and mental struggles were handled, and overall this was a good story. ( ) STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND is a riveting story about a very unique woman. Sally sees the world and processes things differently that most people, perhaps due in part to her traumatic childhood, or not. When her dad jokingly told her to throw him out with the garbage when he dies, she did just that. However, burning her dead father’s body in an incinerator brought the wrong attention to her doorstep, including some ghosts from her horrific past. This book was a slow burn, but one I was quickly immersed in. It’s just as much an intriguing character study as it is a gripping suspense novel. I enjoyed viewing things through Sally’s distinctive POV. The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I’d hoped, as it almost leaves an opening for a sequel, but why? Still, this was a fantastically suspenseful read. Dark and disturbing, but I couldn’t look away. Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for providing me a copy of this book. Opinions are my own. Strange Sally Diamond is one of those unforgettable, shocking, and very disturbing reads. It is one of the darkest thrillers I have ever read, but well deserving of five glowing stars. Sally is strange. She is in her forties, and keeps to herself. Not fond of any social situations she feigns deafness so that she won’t have to converse with people. She is very literal and innuendo and sarcasm escapes her – though she is very intelligent. She is introduced to many strangers and gradually her disturbing back story comes to light. And what a story! A dark and extremely disturbing saga of abuse, abduction, paedophilia, and manipulative behaviour. Not for the faint of heart. We as readers are also privy to another story, that of a boy called Peter. How Sally’s story merges with Peter’s is a compelling and fascinating narrative. I felt deep sympathy for both Sally and Peter in very different ways. Their experiences explored the depravity and immense cruelty that we as humans are capable of inflicting on others. The cycle of abuse is never-ending. this was so disappointing. it started out well, and interesting, and then just veered off into territory that made no sense, had no understanding of trauma or trauma response, and was just generally unnecessary. it took what could be an interesting story - the "after" in someone's life after they'd be raised in captivity and then released, and made it a sort of voyeuristic strange story that didn't feel interesting or realistic. a real opportunity lost.
Despite the grim subject matter, Sally is an appealing character - strange, yes, but also engagingly literal. Nugent hits exactly the right tone of empathy and optimism, but she can't fully banish the darkness. Nugent fashions an unforgettable protagonist in Sally, and never loses sight of her character's fundamental humanity, even as she piles on twists and steers the narrative into exceptional darkness. Inventive, addictive, and bold, this deserves a wide audience. Nugent writes relatable, imperfect characters, and her portrayal of Sally's neurodivergence allows a look into the struggles of daily life that most take for granted. This well-written, engaging novel isn't for the light of heart, but it will find a home with readers who thrive on intricate plotlines and character development. AwardsDistinctionsNotable Lists
