Adapted from Shaffer's play, the film presents the life of Antonio Salieri, a mediocre 18th century Viennese composer obsessed with and jealous of the musical genius of the age: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
A successful composer is mad with jealousy over Mozart.
It's entertaining, and it looks impressive, but there's not enough depth to sustain a three-hour movie. And the whole misinforming-people-about-history thing is annoying. It's really hard for me to get past the fact that this comes across like a biopic when it's entirely fictional.
