Those who walk it do not return -- because at the end of that walk, at the Cold Mountain penitentiary, is the room in which sits the electric chair. It is 1932. The newest inhabitant of Death Row is a giant black man, John Coffey, convicted -- apparently on his own admission -- of the senseless and brutal murder of two little girls. Executing a man is never easy, but at first sight taking society#65533;s revenge on Coffey is one of the easier jobs chief guard Paul Edgecombe and his fellow warders have had to do. But nothing is as it seems with John Coffey, and around him unfolds a story both bizarre and horrifying. Whether he is an evil murderer or a holy innocent, Coffey has strange powers, which may yet offer salvation to others, even if they can do nothing to save him. THE GREEN MILE is perhaps the finest novel yet by one of the world#65533;s greatest storytellers, by turns warmly human and shatteringly horrific, and unputdownable from first page to last. English | score: 3 A killer is about to gain new insight into his life in prison and the one man who will walk him down that green mile toward destiny. English | score: 3 The tie-in audiobook of the bestselling novel, now a major Hollywood film starring James Cromwell, Harry Dean Stanton and Tom Hanks. Muller has become the voice of Stephen King because he's perfect for King's weird characters. This plot about Death Row and the people who inhabit it calls for a weak and dying old woman, as well as a seven-foot black giant who is incarcerated for a brutal murder but is as gentle as a feather. Through tone and emphasis, Muller takes you inside the minds of both characters. The only drawback to hearing this serialized book in a set is that you won't put time between the parts as King intended by publishing the book over a period of 10 months. J.E.G. Originally published in 1996 in six self-contained monthly installments, The Green Mile is an astonishingly rich and complex novel that delivers over and over again. Each individual volume became a huge success when first published, and all six were on the New York Times bestseller list simultaneously. Three years later, when Frank Darabont made The Green Mile into an award-winning movie starring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, the book returned to the bestseller list -- and stayed there for months. And now -- with a new introduction by King's foreign agent Ralph Vicinanza, as well as the author's own foreword -- we have the first hardcover edition of this magnificent novel in which "King surpasses our expectations, leaves us spellbound and hungry for the next twist of plot" (The Boston Globe).
