The suspense starts at the beginning of the book, ramps up its intensity as the story continues and ends with a surprise revelation that includes even more suspense. This is a perfectly well-written romantic suspense, with characters that are relatable and flawed as well as totally believable. Lindsey Barnes is a personal chef who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up being the only eyewitness to a home invasion murder. Detective Jack Tucker is the lead investigator who has difficulty at first believing Lindsey’s account of what happened and presses her to remember more details so that he has more to go on on order to catch a killer. The story continues with part of Lindsey’s backstory and why she doesn’t particularly trust the police and especially Jack. Fascinating details here! There is a secondary story of a handyman who was at the site of the murder and who is Jack’s first suspect. The author does an expert job of weaving the storylines together, including Lindsey’s need for counseling, her past trauma and Jack’s past as well. This book was hard to put down and an engrossing read with a compelling mystery that begged to be solved. I must confess that I love mystery and suspense and read them a lot, but the surprise revelation in this one had me gasping and loving the story even more. With a fast pace, characters who beg for a good resolution and twists that I never saw coming, this moves up to the top of my list of best romantic suspense books this year. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16th CFR, Part 255, “Guidelines Concerning the Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising.” Personal chef Lindsey Barnes had a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Once again she found herself on the scene of a violent crime. St Louis County Detective Jack Tucker finds himself in a situation that leaves him feeling very conflicted. His key witness strikes a cord with him, but seems to have taken an immediate dislike to him, and to top it off, she reminds him of his biological mother for all the wrong reasons. Irene Hannon builds an intense suspense story with a lot of romantic angst in Over the Edge. The title of this book fits perfectly as Lindsey feels herself being pushed closer to the edge of sanity in this story which leans toward being a psychological thriller. It is a compelling tale that will hold readers firmly in its grasp until the last page. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Over the Edge from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own. “Sometimes there was a fine line between perseverance and stubbornness.” But stubbornness is a trait that gets Lindsay out of a tough situation. She is recovering from trauma months ago and finds herself the sole witness to a murder scene as the culprit exits the house. Ms Hannon once again puts her heroine through the ringer. Lindsay starts questioning what she has seen when someone _targets her psychologically. With the help of Jack Turner, a St. Louis County cop, they try to piece together clues to find a murderer. Full of mind games and thrilling scenes, i read this book in record time. With many suspects to choose from, I was kept guessing until the reveal. The characters were relatable and had depth. The plot was mesmerizing. I always enjoy books set in St. Louis where I lived for 20 years. As always, Ms. Hannon writes excellent romantic suspense with a solid faith thread to encourage readers. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell via NetGalley. Author Irene Hannon is back with Book 2 in her Undaunted Courage Series, and Over the Edge should not be missed! She brings readers a riveting tale of malicious mischief, mayhem, and murder. She creates an atmosphere of suspense that will keep you on guard as you read each page of this book! My favorite thing about Hannon’s writing is how the suspense triggers the romance. The romance is a slow burn, and seeing how Hannon weaves it into her plot is always interesting. Lindsey Barnes is a trauma survivor who is now the sole witness to another murder, and she thinks someone is trying to kill her because of it. Police detective Jack Turner does not know how to handle this witness or this case because there is no evidence behind her claims. Is Lindsey psychotic? Someone is going to a lot of trouble, making it appear that she is. Yet, Jack believes in her innocence. They must work together to prove who is trying to make her look insane. Hannon writes an excellent description of Lindsey’s good deed that turns into a kidnapping and cat-and-mouse search for her. Will Lindsey be clever enough to leave a clue for Jack? Will Jack know where to look for a clue? Please read this intriguing new release to find the answers to these questions and enjoy a thoroughly entertaining book. I highly recommend it! Talented chef Lindsay Barnes recently moved to St. Louis after experiencing a traumatic event. When she returns to a client’s home to retrieve her knife roll, she inadvertently stumbles onto a murder scene. As she hides from the killer who’s still there, she happens to catch a brief glimpse. When bizarre things begin to happen to her, is she suffering from PTSD, or is someone trying to gaslight her? Then there’s the charming detective who’s too handsome for his own good & who she blames for a heartbreaking incident involving her friend. Will they be able to work together to find the killer?
Police Detective Jack Tucker had a difficult childhood, but luckily thrived after being adopted out of foster care. When he meets Lindsay at a murder scene, he’s puzzled by her cold treatment of him. He also doubts her credibility at first after learning about her traumatic past, & questioning the bizarre incidents that keep happening to her. He also hesitates getting involved with someone who might be suffering from mental issues after dealing with his birth mother. As he gets to know her, he quells his doubts & begins falling for her, but someone is clearly out to get her & as she remembers more about the murder, she becomes even more of a _target.
This book had me on pins & needles. At times, I doubted Lindsay herself & wondered if she was an unreliable narrator. The psychological games were definitely chilling. There were several potential suspects each with a motive for murder & it wasn’t until about 2/3rds into the book that the suspects were revealed. From there, it’s a thrill ride as Lindsay doesn’t recognize the killer until it’s almost too late. The romance was so well done. I loved the depth of these characters & appreciated how they helped each other as they forged a new understanding between them.
It’s a rollercoaster ride I thoroughly enjoyed that had just the right amount of romance & faith. Highly recommend to romantic suspense fans! Though part of a series, each book can easily be read as a standalone. Now I can’t wait to find out what happens to the next sibling. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher.
