A new mom in need of help opens her door to her long-estranged mother--only to invite something much darker inside--in this "fast-paced and frightening debut" (Rachel Harrison) about the long shadows cast by family secrets, perfect for readers of Grady Hendrix or Ashley Audrain. Flora is a new mom enamored of her baby girl, Iris, who has arrived a few weeks early. But with her husband still deployed, Flora must navigate the newborn stage alone. As the sleepless nights pass in the loneliness of their half-empty home, the edges of her reality begin to blur. Just as Flora becomes convinced she is losing her mind, a surprising guest shows up to help: Flora's own mother, to whom she hasn't spoken in years. Can they mend their fraught relationship? Or is there more that Flora's mother isn't telling her about the events that led to their estrangement? As stranger and scarier events unfold, Flora begins to fear that her mother's secrets have allowed something truly evil to enter her home. She must decide: is her hold on reality slipping dangerously away? Or is she, in fact, the only thing standing between a terrifying visitor and her baby? … (more)

This book was like a fever dream. I didn't know which way was up with it. It was definitely super weird. I've also never had kids, so that maybe would help relating to this book more. There was a lot about breastfeeding. [spoilers] Flora just had a baby but her husband was away in the military. She has an estranged relationship with her mother, but decides to ask her to come and she shows up to help. But shit gets super weird. The power keeps going out and Flora is losing time. And her mom is helping with the baby, so much so that her mom starts breastfeeding the baby. At that point, I was like seriously? What the fuck? That biologically makes no sense (which they do point out in the book.) She finds more about her mom and her history. And how one of her friends committed suicide in the building where she was living. It's just weird and then the mother tries to kill her and the baby in the tub. But then it's like, did that happen? Her husband ends up coming home. And come to find out, her mom died a few years previous by suicide. The story her mom told her about the friend that died, was actually her story. She reaches out to the one friend that she knew her mom had and she ends up coming to the house to try to do a seance because she was convinced that her mom was trying to kill her and her baby. Come to find out, Flora was actually a twin and her "imaginary friend" as a child, who's name was the same as her twin that died (actually killed by the mom. Flora was supposed to die too but she survived). Even though she never knew her. The imaginary friend had come back too. It was all weird. And they do a seance and I'm trying to remember the ending. I think maybe the mom and the imaginary friend reunite or something. But I think she's no longer possessed. But then it ends that it's 3 years later and she's pregnant again and her eye twitches and she has a sweet tooth which is how her mom felt when she was pregnant with the twins. I think this book is bringing postpartum to light more but also like postpartum on crack? But who am I to judge, i've never had kids! ( )

This is excellent post-partum horror, but I am glad I read it while my youngest is well into her third year. I think I was too close to this psychosis for this to have been healthy in the early days. Half of the horror is just living in a post-partum body and having to care for a helpless infant. Add on generational trauma and mommy issues and this is a recipe for a nightmare. ( )

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

This was great! The characters felt well developed, and I'm really glad it turned out the way it did. I had a few moments I was guessing where it was going and it continually surprised me. A great ghost/haunting story! ( )
