Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:

A beautiful, grief-stricken woman has vanished without a trace. So has the detective hired to find her. And a lot of money...

Enter tough-nosed private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. Rooted in the streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen it all and survived. But this case leads them into unexpected territory: a place of lies and corruption, where trusting anyone could get them killed, and where nothing is sacred.

Another superior thriller from Dennis Lehane, the bestselling and acclaimed author of Mystic River, Shutter Island, and Gone, Baby, Gone.

Such a great reunion

I've enjoyed the Kenzie & Gennaro books in the past, and this is an emotional reunion with an electric story as the backdrop. Fantastic. Lehane is an amazing storyteller. ( )

My first Lehane book, and maybe my last. Didn't enjoy this, and I'm surprised by it because so many booktubers seem to love his work. The snarkiness of the main investigator got on my nerves, and I just think the characters were quite shallow. I finished the book just to finish it. ( )

There are some stellar scenes in this book. But they’re holding up a very silly plot. ( )

DL hit his stride w Sacred. Burned through this book. Kenzie's character grows and dominates the scene while others are introduced and given enough life to add to the scenes. Paced well with thoughtful passages that didn't drag the story down. Loved the ending on the coast of Maine. Thought the tying to the chairs was a bit much and Gennaro digging herself out of the hole? And again with the ultimate evil villains. So far no ambiguity in DLs bad guys. Still, detective books don't usually rate this high. After I finished the last page I held it up and patted it, thinking "Now this was a good read". Almost a 5. ( )

Epigraph
Do not give dogs what is sacred;
do not throw your pearls to pigs.
If you do, they may trample them underfoot,
and then turn and tear you to pieces.

Book description
From School Library Journal
Dying billionaire Trevor Stone has his thugs kidnap sleuths Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro and bring them to his mansion so he can hire them to find his missing daughter, Desiree. She is supposedly grief-stricken over the death of her mother and the impending death of her father but it becomes clear that she may not be the sweet and beautiful daughter her father describes. Patrick's mentor, Jay Becker, was the first investigator on the case but he has also disappeared. Patrick and Angie follow the trail to Florida after a brief encounter with a group of religious swindlers who may be involved with the disappearances. Every person they meet adds more confusion and conflicting information to the puzzling case. The intricate mystery of the changing identity of Desiree, dangerous car chases, bloody shoot-outs, and the humorous dialogue between Patrick and Angie, all with subtle romantic overtones, will keep you turning pages.
