Although part of a long-standing cozy mystery series, this novel (book 10) was the first I've had the opportunity to read from The Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mysteries. I love some of the author's other cozy series, and it was no surprise that the Sherlock themed book would be entertaining. The writing style and plot are easily readable, and, even though the pace slows down in a couple of instances, overall, it's constant. The characters and contemporary setting fit in nicely with the numerous homages to Holmes and I look forward to reading a book set across the pond. For cozy fans and general Sherlockians. Net Galley Feedback A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery # 10 A quick look: Gemma Doyle is in London for her sister’s wedding waiting for her at the hotel is her ex-husband Paul Erikson, a rare book owner who asked her to meet him at his book store the next day, he has a rare book he wish her to see. When Gemma arrives at his store she found him dead in his office.....setting the stage for another saga.... My thoughts: The author gives us enough contexts setting making it easy to get into it at this point but don’t get baited by the lovely title this story is a cozy classic mystery easy to figure out what’s happening before it happens. No mind-bending or dazzling mystery to figure out just the very observant Gemma, her best friend Jayne and sister Pippa following Paul’s trail of friends, enemies, clients and ex-lovers. To get to the bottom of this mystery the team of sleuths use all their wit before their time in London is over and while doing so they entertained us along the way. Their characterization is the run of the mill nothing special in my books. I enjoyed this story but plot wise nothing to write home about: simple and easy to follow, nicely written for all to enjoy and being entertained but nothing more. I received this ARC from the publisher Crooked Lane Books via Netgalley for my thoughts: this is the way I see it. amateur-sleuth, London, England, Met-Police, ex-husband, family, family-dynamics, family-expectations, friendship, murder, bookseller, investigation, verbal-humor, cozy-mystery, situational-humor, retired-cop, current-boyfriend, secrets, lies***** Gemma is back for a visit to her hometown of London, England to celebrate with all and sundry (including her BFF and her US police detective boyfriend) for her sister's wedding. Enter (and exit) her ex-husband who says he has a book for her. Before she can find out what he really wants she (complete with witnesses) finds him dead of strangulation in his office above his shabby bookstore. Good thing she (and her ex-copper dad) know the DI on the case as the investigation gets a bit sticky. It might stand alone, but it's so much better having read some of the earlier in series. Loved it! The whole series is a winner! I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you! #CanadianAuthor #TheIncidentoftheBookintheNighttime #SherlockHolmesBookshopMysteriesBk10 A lovely and very cosy whodunnit novel. Easy to read, the characters are mostly quite loveable and the story unfolds not too linear, hence you won't know whodunnit after the first 50 pages (usually my qualm with whodunnit stories) but it still makes sense in the end. A very enjoyable story for a relaxing read. The current state (July 13th) of the ARC is unfortunately that it still needs a proper proofreading, my version has oddities like "egg yoke" in it (and many, many more typos, misplaced commas, etc.). If those would remain for the published story (release date: 14th January 2025) I would have to take two more stars off, unfortunately. -- Transparency disclaimer: Receiving a free ARC version of this book via NetGalley did not influence my review in any way, shape or form. no reviews | add a review

Bookshop owner Gemma Doyle heads to London for a wedding, but when a body is found in connection with a rare book, Gemma sets out to sleuth the slaying in bestselling author Vicki Delany's 10th Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery. Gemma Doyle and her friends have packed their bags and headed to London for her sister Pippa's wedding. Waiting for her in the hotel lobby is none other than Gemma's ex-husband, Paul Erikson. Paul has a rare book he wants her to see-calling it "the real deal"-so Gemma agrees to meet him at their old shop, Trafalgar Fine Books, the following day. But when Gemma arrives, accompanied by Grant, a rare book dealer, they find Paul dead in his office. Paul had been down on his luck, but Gemma never expected this. Had he borrowed money from people he shouldn't have? And where is the valuable book he was so anxious for Gemma to see? It's nowhere to be found in the shop. Because of their previous relationship, Gemma feels she owes something to Paul and vows to find his killer. As Gemma and her best friend Jayne Wilson follow Paul's trail of friends, enemies, clients, and ex-lovers through London to Yorkshire, she realizes the puzzle of Paul's last days is more twisted than she originally thought. This mystery is anything but elementary, and Gemma and Jayne have to use all their wit to get to the bottom of it before their time in London--or in life--is over. No library descriptions found. |

Gemma reluctantly agrees and arrives at the bookstore that was once hers with a couple of friends only to find Paul dead in his office, an obvious victim of murder. Although she doesn't want to investigate, she can't help her curiosity or her powers of observation.
Finding her ex's address book, she sets herself and friends off on a quest to question those who knew him better. She believes that the "real deal" he was talking about is a rare book and is surprised when her distant cousin, known to be financially embarrassed, is on the list.
Gemma has asked just one thing. She doesn't want Gemma to involve the secret government department she represents, but somehow, before things are over, Gemma and her department are intimately involved.
This was another excellent addition to the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series. ( )
