My husband's grandmother grew up close to where Ellwyne lived so I really wanted to like this book, but I found it a bit disappointing. I had some trouble getting into the book due to the writing style, and I felt that it dragged at points. I did not read straight through and I read to the end, but only because I felt obligated as an early reviewer. While the author was telling a true story, so basic facts could not be changed, the descriptions of characters and their interactions didn't always seem real. I had empathy for Ellwyne, who seemed to have one challenge after another. One thing I did enjoy was the descriptions of life in rural Ontario, with few modern conveniences. It was definitely not an easy life! ( )This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is The true story of Ellwyne Dacosta, son of a bridge builder. After the loss of his father, then his mother, he was taken to England by his stepfather, who was very abusive. They ended up moving to Ontario, Canada where life got better for him. He ended up living at a farm in Ekfrid Township where he was much loved. Life was good, and then came the War. And he enlisted. I found the story so interesting I could not put it down. A must read. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This was such an enjoyable book! I was immediately drawn in by the imagery created in the telling of how a special tree came to be. Adding touches about that tree through out the story was so well done. The characters in this story were brought to life for me and I came to love the Carruthers clan. I felt their trials and losses as the story went on. The author evoked great emotion in this tale and did justice to the telling of a soldier's story and keeping his memory alive. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This is a novelization of a true story of the life of Ellwyne Ballantine (DaCosta) and the impact he had on those around him especially his adopted families. As with any life story, there are periods of happiness and sadness filled with delightful people and cads. This book gives you insight into daily life in rural Ontario, as well as other parts of the world, during the first part of the 20th Century. The book reads as if a grandparent was telling you stories from when they were young. There are parts that remind you to watch carefully who you closely associate with and to be vigilant to find ways to protect those you rely on you. It was an easy read, again as if you were enjoying a visit and telling stories. World recommend to those who enjoy glimpses into real life history and those who enjoy tales of a whole lifetime of a person. no reviews | add a review
