Although Kirk appeared to perish at the conclusion of Star Trek Generations, the big national bestseller, The Return, revealed the amazing story of Kirk's resurrection. Now, William Shatner brings his distinctive blend of talents as an actor, writer, director, and producer to continue the saga of Jim Kirk's second life -- and to reunite one of the greatest teams of any future century...Star Trek: Avenger. A lethal virogen, inimical to all conventional forms of planet life, threatens the entire Federation with starvation and dissolution. In this moment of Starfleet's greatest need, Captain James T. Kirk, long believed dead, embarks on a desperate quest to find the true source of the mysterious virogen. Elsewhere in the galaxy, Ambassador Spock, his diplomatic efforts stalled by the spread of famine and chaos, returns to his native world of Vulcan to confront a mystery of a deeply personal nature -- an investigation that soon leads him to a reunion with a long-lost friend he never expected to see again. I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the other two in the trilogy, but it's very much of a piece with them. Kirk surprisingly defeats death again. Every (much-younger) lady swoons for him. There are mind-melds. Kirk, Spock and McCoy are reunited. They work in concert (though sometimes suspiciously) with the crew from TNG. I can't say I didn't like it, because the Reeves-Stevenses are lots of fun. Of course, it's all vastly in its own little canonical universe, not really connected even to any of the other books in the Star Trek canon - just its own little Shatnerverse.

BOTTOM-LINE:
All abour renewal and cycles
.
PLOT OR PREMISE:
This is the third in a Star Trek trilogy, with nanites, sentient Borg, and Vulcan terrorists.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
The portrayal of the TNG crew is a little better in this book, perhaps reflecting the better portrayals seen in the TNG movies. It links Kirk, Spock, Picard, and the entire history of the various Enterprises together with Sarek.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

A quite enjoyable trip into nostalgia. This time Kirk, Spock and McCoy save the universe again along with the help of the people of the Enterprise and the crew of a science vessel, the Tobias. There seems to be no right or wrong side to be on - only the methods used for getting the message across differs. A deadly virogen is sweeping the galaxy unchecked and demands sacrifices and renewal of old friendships to prevent the fall of the Federation as a result of the devastation. Only time will tell if this is only temporary or if the lessons have been learned to secure the future. ( )

The third in a sort-of trilogy by Shatner, sort-of (Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens are credited co-writers on the inside) featuring James T. Kirk, alive and well in Picard's time. This novel features the two captains' opposing approaches to solving a Federation-wide plant virus which threatens galaxy-wide famine. Aided by Spock and McCoy, the good guys triumph for now. A fairly mundane approach to what could be a highly enjoyable team of Kirk and Picard, no doubt considerably improved by the co-writers. ( )

Dedication
Three is a lucky number. This is the third of a trilogy of novels. And I also have three editors to whom I wish to dedicate this novel:
Kevin Ryan, John Ordover, and Margaret Clark.
Members of the illustrious clan of Simon & Schuster. All good things come in threes. Now just to louse things up, the publisher has asked for another two novels. I've got to find me a couple of editors.
