We're beginning to enter the truly strange territory that I've been hoping for. This got really out there... and I do love a good riddle. ( )

I loved it , its hard to describe what I like about the book but I simply love it. As it is dead center of the series lengthy review seems to loose its value, but this book still stands on its own and is an entertaining story. Despite its length it doesn't feel drawn out as well. It feels just right and I love it for that! If you are reading reviews for the third book in the series I would suspect you are already hooked. But if by chance you are checking out reviews for the books in the series and are still on the edge, I invite you to jump in, it is different and tasty read (true for all books I've read so far, maybe first not so much) . RECOMMENDED ( )

Love this whole series. I hope they make movie #2 with Idris Elba. Great casting. ( )

This is a really good installment of the series. I'm not extremely fond of some of the inappropriate, icky bits... but that's what the "skip ahead" button is for. ( )

Epigraph
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,

And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,

And the dry stone no sound of water. Only

There is shadow under this red rock,

(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),

And I will show you something different from either

Your shadow in the morning striding behind you

Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;

I will show you fear in a handful of dust.

-- T.S. Eliot

If there pushed any ragged thistle-stalk

Above its mates, the head was chopped; the bents

Were jealous else. What made those holes and rents

In the dock's hearth swarth leaves, bruised as to balk

All hop of greenness? 'tis a brute must walk

Pashing their life out, with a brute's intents.

-- Robert Browning

"What river is it?" enquired Millicent idly.

"It's only a stream. Well, perhaps a little more than that. It's called the Waste."

"Is it really?"

"Yes," said Winifred, "it is."

First words
It was her third time with live ammunition. . .and her first time on the draw from the holster Roland had rigged for her.

Quotations
The house was alive. He knew this, could feel its awareness reaching out from the boards and the slumping roof, could feel it pouring in rivers from the black sockets of its windows. The idea of approaching that terrible place filled him with dismay; the idea of actually going inside filled him with inarticulate horror.
