I had first heard of Gladys through the movie "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" with Ingrid Bergman. I enjoyed the movie and as I read this book, I thought the movie had covered quite a bit of her life, though when the book mentions the movie, it points out all of the errors it made (or making her story Hollywood-ized). Ai-Weh-Deh (the foreign devil), as she was called, thought the movie was "lie upon lie upon lie."
It is an inspiring story of a woman who devoted herself entirely to God's service and learned to follow his leading instead of her own. A woman who wouldn't give up even if her body was breaking down.
For another book about this incredible woman, read The Small Woman by Alan Burgess. ( )
