The first time I just couldn't get into it and dropped it 1/3 of the way through. After a year or so, I picked it up again and rather enjoyed it. Jim Butcher has excellent pacing in his novels and Harry Dresden, Chicago's only Wizard for Hire, is entertaining and chivilorous and I wish there were more men out there like him. Great read. ( ) Dresden is the only wizard (that we know of) in Chicago and he’s up against some pretty scary werewolves. And sometimes he helps the police and sometimes they’re locking him up. And sometimes the werewolves help him and sometimes they nearly kill him. Then there are the local mafiosi to contend with. Who’s killing innocents in grizzly ways? Everyone has a reason to find out, and Dresden keeps making foolish decisions but ultimately the crime is solved. Very similar feel in pacing and the pages and pages of "let me explain myself to you"... I understand this calms down somewhat as the series goes on. Let's hope so. As it goes, it's okay, and the various types of werewolves were fun. The books have both had enough fun stuff to keep me going, but there is a fair amount of sludge to get through to get to the fun stuff. Book 2 of the Dresden files, and I'm beginning to notice some of the Terry Pratchett traits used in the Discworld method of storytelling; namely Butcher's repeated descriptions of Dresden himself, his car, his home (in the same way Pratchett describes the Discworld at the start of each book). I enjoyed the description of magic circles, and the introduction of werewolves (hexenwolves, loupe-garous and lycanthropes). Particularly liked the mention of Saint Patrick's curse, and and the Norse berserkers. There is a reference to the Peanuts theme tune too. Book ends with a showdown. Belongs to Series

HTML: Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicago's only openly practicing wizard. He is also dead broke. His vast knowledge and magical skills are unfortunately matched by his talent for making powerful enemies and alienating friends. With little more than his integrity left, he accepts an offer of work from Lt. Karin Murphy of the Chicago PD Special Investigations Unit. He wants to redeem himself in Murphy's eyes and make enough money to quiet his rumbling stomach. Soon he finds himself pinned between trigger-happy FBI agents, shape-shifting motorcycle gang members, a threatened mobster boss, and an heir to an ancient curse along with his primal fiancée. Throw in environmental activists and a pair of young werewolves in love and you have something of Fool Moon. Written by New York Times bestselling Author Jim Butcher. Narrated by James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). .No library descriptions found. |
