I really enjoyed the plot in Little Vampire Goes to School, but the illustrations made the page cluttered and difficult to focus on the text. The illustrations were set up in a way where I was confused where to read. At one point, the text was black on a dark purple background and I almost could not read it. I wish they pages were less cluttered so I could enjoy the story more. ( ) The Little Vampire longs to go to school and make friends, but children only go to school during the day light when a little vampire should be sleeping. His ghost and monster friends all decide to help him by going to the school at night with him. The Little Vampire starts writing in one of the students’ notebooks and completing the little boy’s homework for him. The little boy, named Michael, and The Little Vampire start exchanging notes and Michael is surprised that a vampire has been doing his homework! The Little Vampire and Michael meet and become friends after The Capatain of the Dead discovers that The Little Vampire has revealed his existence to a human and wants the boy brought to him. Joann Sfar's "Little Vampire Goes to School" is one of the most artfully creative books discovered thus far. Set up like a comic book, this story examines the Little Vampire's longing for a normal life as a student with "real" friends. The subsequent folly that follows makes for a creative and colorful trip through the desires and antics of playful monsters. While the story itself is fun and easy to read, the illustrative style which Sfar uses in this fantastical tale takes center stage.Although too intricate for read alouds, this book would entertain anyone who feels the need for a delightfully creepy laugh. This book is about a young vampire that wants very badly to go to school and make friends of his own age. However, he can only go at night when the school is completely empty because vampires can't go out during the day. At nighttime, he goes to the school and begins doing homework in a notebook that he found on a desk, which belongs to a kid named Michael. The two begin to write notes back and forth to one another, and when Little Vampire reveals his identity Michael doesn't believe him. Little Vampire looks up Michael's address in the school records and goes to his house one night. At first Michael is frightened, but soon realizes that Little Vampire is harmless, and the two end up becoming great friends. An amazing little picture book written and drawn in classic comic book fashion, Little Vampire is about a little vampire who wants nothing more than to go to school, but when his mother lets him go he realizes that no one is there at night! So all the monsters and ghouls he lives with help turn the school into a night school. Little Vampire soon makes a mortal friend and they learn that they are not so different. Although it is a very charming read it is recommended for ages 10 and up, due to some frightening images and sensitive topics. I might read it to a slightly older class as a Halloween treat. no reviews | add a review
