I read this in Dr. Tillman's class; it is so thoughtfully and meticulously compiled and edited. It truly allowed me to understand the evolution of feminism over the centuries and decades in a way that a text book could not have done. Simply put, this is a great book for a crash course in feminism evolution and is great for someone who likes a compilation of narratives rather than a biography or textbook. ( )

This is an excellent overview of the evolution of women's rights world-wide from the early 1400's to today. Freedman took good care of representing most issues and shows how concerns changed throughout the centuries: education, right to ownership, inheritance, vote; later health issues and reproductive rights, sexual orientation and the list goes on. Freedman's introductions are astute and help ground each essay. Some themes are recurrent and sometimes repetitive; I was surprised not to see anything about body image, plastic surgery and anorexia; but the global perspective was refreshing and a real learning experience.
