The death of 14 million young children each year is perhaps the greatest contradiction of our planet's pretension of civilization. UNICEF argues that many of these deaths can now be prevented with low-cost medical technology, but the challenge lies in finding ways of making this care available to those who need it. The 1987 State of the World's Children, which focuses on growth monitoring, compiles reports sent from around the world to articulate the potential for a revolution in the survival and normal growth of the world's children. The report contains 28 articles documenting the experiences of countries that have mobilized to place breakthroughs in low-cost child health care at the disposal of the majority of their citizens.
